Man, I remember when most of the popular ships in fandom were rivals and/or enemies, and even the "normal" ones were angsted up in fic. It was a little edgy but it worked for me.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember being into friendship pairings and feeling really outnumbered because everyone seemed to gravitate toward rival/enemy ones. But I still agree that it worked because it's not like most people cared that I wasn't into their ships. (Not saying fandom was a paradise then, but it wasn't... like this.)

Is it just me, or are even the rivalships kind of downplayed now? Like I'm not really a fan of Klance, but I've clicked on a few fics that looked interesting and they all seemed to treat them like... best friends who occasionally tease each other, not rivals.

Fandom is going thru a puritanical phase. I blame the fact fanfiction and such is becoming more mainstream. Combined with social media, it creates groups that want to police Fandom so that it looks more respectable.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. It was such a good approach to fandom. I have no idea why people didn't stick with that instead of trying to police everyone else's tastes.

Wht are some fans sucking the fun out of fandom? Ship who you want, OP. And have fun.

It has been a trend in fandom for a while. A very annoying trend.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
this is a real out-there question, but can I ask where your icon's from?

I'm tired too. I keep on seeing fanfic authors earnestly warning for anything less than pure PG fluff. It boggles the mind.

I remember when people would apologize that their fic had no smut.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I am SO SICK of all of the policing and politics that are surrounding femslash now-a-days. People trying to decide if you're a "real femslash shiper," the pairing disdain, and the general 'watch this show or else you're not a real femslasher' is REALLY starting to grind my gears. I'm still a hardcore femslasher, and will stay one, but this shit is getting on my nerves.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, purity culture is all over the place, but there are some fandoms where I feel like even more pressure is put on f/f to be healthy, and it's a lot of performative bullshit from people who seem vaguely put off by women actually fucking each other like animals rather than sharing clothes and holding hands. Like, I always wanted more femslash, but it was more fun when more of the fic that you could find was interesting.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The pressure to like femslash in the first place is making me not like it. The hardcore fans already act like if you like het or slash (especially slash, even though it seems like het would be a bigger threat since slash doesn't take "away any" any women from being shipped with other women), you already hate femslash. You cannot like more than one, you must choose! Well, now that's nearly the case for me because of this very attitude, so congrats on your self-made truth.

It's seeping into the rest of fandom now as well tbh, anything that's not pure and twee is Not To Be Shipped and I even like cute, happy ships but I'm not about to stop people from enjoying fucked up ships if they want.

For a second there I thought that was Missy with Gwen Cooper (from Torchwood). Now that'd be an interesting fic!

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
If you don't write smolbeans soft wlw f/f and have any kind of sex whatsoever your a problematic misogynistic homophobe who loves to fetishize women according to tumblr, even if you're a lesbian/bi

Really tired of this whole sex is bad narrative they're pushing. It's just a different kind of homophobia tbh

I, for one, do not welcome the supposed arrival of our new thought police overlords.

Ship whomever, whatever you want!

I agree with your general point about not being judged, Fandom is SIDS right now, but I think you're a little off base about regular slash being judged differently.

Nah, this is happening in pretty much all fandom right now, no matter whether it's m/m or f/f or m/f. No matter the ship, if it's the slightest bit problematic, you're going to hear about it from the fandom police.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-26 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've never really seen this happen imo, but maybe I'm just lucky.

There's some messed up femslash fics in the overwatch fandom in case anybody is looking for some recs.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-26 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
That is a great fucking screenshot. Just sayin'.

Also, I think a lot of this is related to the extreme preference of femslash fandom for canon relationships over non-canon, which is a very distinctive characteristic of f/f fandom compared to m/m fandom. I'm not saying it's just as simple as that but i think it's related.

Its worse with femslash, because you can only ship canon, and everything has to be lesbian representation. It got worse after Clexa. You can't ship any noncanon ships, especially if its enemies, without being told you hate yourself as a lesbian and that you're making the young baby lesbians hate themselves. I'm sick of it, slash fans get a ton of hatesex ships but femslash will always be policed.
