Look to other countries. Chinese kung fu movies have some amazing effects and interesting stories.

I grew up on those Chinese wuxia and fantasy films but I can't watch them anymore. The effects have caught up with the times... the relationship tropes, not so much.

Do you have any wuxia recommendations? I absolutely love Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero, though I realize those might be considered too ~mainstrem~ among wuxia fanatics. ;) I would love to watch other similar fantasy-esque martial arts movies, though.

I was fond of The Bride with White Hair once.

The Painted Skin series is more straight-up schlocky fantasy than CTHD and Hero (which are more prestige-type films in the genre), but they have slick production designs and beautiful, talented actresses in compelling roles. Though I should say that I am the anon above who complained about relationship tropes in Chinese films, and these movies are no exception. In both installments, I found myself wishing the male lead would just go away.
