I agree. But at the same time, I don't think there's a lot of fantasy series that's both (A) popular enough and (B) good enough to get the full-on lavish action blockbuster treatment. I expect we'll see a lot more 'normal'-budget TV series - either along the lines of Shannara or Legend of the Seeker, where it turns into a CW series, or along the lines of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell or American Gods, where it's a more normal prestige drama level of thing. I do know that someone licensed the Black Company books, so I don't know where that'll fall.

Personally I'm excited for the prestige-y TV adaptations of literary fantasy novels, because there are so many things in that category that you could do that I'd love. Why is no one doing a TV adaptation of A Fine And Private Place yet?

The Peter S Beagle book? OH MY GOD YES I WANT THIS SO MUCH ALREADY

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it was a mistake to the Shannara books. Brooks already had a much better book series to film which would have allowed them to use real world sets and locations as well as fantasy stuff. They should have done Kingdom of Landover.

I heard about attempts to make a Landover movie a few years ago and it was an abomination. The thought was to give Ben kids who would go to Landover with him, a concept I raged over on the IMDB forums at the time. To make it worse, Brooks was apparently OK with this as long as it got his book on screen.

Look to other countries. Chinese kung fu movies have some amazing effects and interesting stories.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I grew up on those Chinese wuxia and fantasy films but I can't watch them anymore. The effects have caught up with the times... the relationship tropes, not so much.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any wuxia recommendations? I absolutely love Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero, though I realize those might be considered too ~mainstrem~ among wuxia fanatics. ;) I would love to watch other similar fantasy-esque martial arts movies, though.

I was fond of The Bride with White Hair once.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The Painted Skin series is more straight-up schlocky fantasy than CTHD and Hero (which are more prestige-type films in the genre), but they have slick production designs and beautiful, talented actresses in compelling roles. Though I should say that I am the anon above who complained about relationship tropes in Chinese films, and these movies are no exception. In both installments, I found myself wishing the male lead would just go away.

It's not....High Fantasy but Valerian looks to be very pretty next month.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, I thought Valerian was a science fiction movie

Like, a Fifth Element, Euro SF comics thing

It is! For some reason I read "fantasy" in the initial secret and my mind shoved "high" in front of it, like elves and magic and shit. That's my fault.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they making more Warcraft movies?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
unlikely.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
A shame. I loved the first one and I don't even play the game.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. It made enough money in China to offset the losses in America and a sequel is in the works.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
And you know they're going to be bringing the heat, quality-wise, with a track record like that

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
oh? I really hope it's not Arthas, because I have no desire to see high elves done badly.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-26 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they're not. It's still a distant possibility but the director just confirmed very recently that the studio rejected the script and have no plans to make a sequel in the next few years.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, OP. I'd love to see another fantasy movie revival, like there was in the 80s. Not all of them were good of course, but it was still neat people made so many.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I would give my left kidney to see an animated series of The Never-ending Story. And yes I know they had one but I mean one based on the book.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-26 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I would watch a movie version of Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger series.

For those who are not familiar with the series, here is the Amazon page for the first book- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AG8HK7C/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

A law student/wannabe rock star gets pulled into a different world with magic and talking animals by a wizard turtle. The college student is high from smoking weed at the time. There is also an otter that is like an R-rated Rocket Raccoon. The guy can use a special musical instrument along with singing to cast magic spells.
