Pokemon Go Update

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
How's everyone else enjoying it?
Pros -
*The cheater-sweep nerfed the high level players who were utterly controlling my county. I have not seen a single 3kcp pokemon of theirs since the sweep. Serves them right.
*Raids are pretty exciting! I have caught two high level pokemon I needed for my dex.
*I like the new gym stuff a lot.

Cons -
*Gyms are BUGGY. Lots of game crashes, freezes, 'you have to wait 5 minutes to add your pokemon to the gym' after winning it.
*New 50 coin cap is kind of annoying.
*Go Plus does not see the gym to spin it.
*I foresee problems with potentially being able to hold other people's pokemon 'hostage' in a low turnover gym by feeding them berries. It would be nice to have a way to pull your pokemon out to get your coins.

I never bothered evolving any of my pokemon or trying for gyms because they were always full of high level pokemon that I would never have a chance against. And now I have no clue how to do any of it. So I'll likely just keep collecting what I can find as I walk to and from work and leave it at that. So, I've not really noticed a difference.

I wondered about a possible cheater sweep, too?! Gyms in my area were constantly held by super high level Pokemon, and the second I defeated a gym, a rival Pokemon would like instantly be popped in. It's possible someone was hiding out somewhere waiting to snipe it, but... Worst part is, most of the gyms with ultra high Pokemon were on my same team, so I couldn't even defeat them. It was hard to get my Pokemon in a gym, let alone hold one for more than a few hours. But now all the gyms are constantly changing Pokemon and no one is too high. Maybe has to do with the different setup of just being able to plop in Pokemon, but there are a lot of low-to-mid-range Pokemon holding gyms, which is kind of fun. No longer gyms consisting entirely of Dragonite and Gyarados.

Overall, I think I like all the changes a lot. I don't mind the 50 coin cap, because I was never able to hold gyms long enough to get more than ten, MAYBE 20 coins a day if I was super lucky. (And for the record, I'm level 30 and have several Pokemon in the high 2000s) I also live in a big city, so the gym traffic/turnover is probably higher than in some areas. Anyway, now if my Pokemon holds a gym for a few hours, I get loads of coins back. It's fantastic! And evidently, Pokemon get kicked out after a few days on their own unless you constantly feed them berries, which I think is way better than letting Pokemon rot there forever.

But yeah, gym battles are a bit buggy. I like the raids, but the visuals aren't great, it's hard to tell what's a normal gym and what's a boss Pokemon gym, and I'm not quite sure if I just don't understand the new visuals or what. For example, not all the boss Pokemon have monster icons above them, so they look just like normal gyms. And if the gym is "tall" or not, can't tell if that makes a difference. I conquered a rival gym that had an egg, and the gym didn't change to my team's color even though I put my Pokemon there.

But I did fight my first boss Pokemon on my own! Defeated it with like one second to spare, literally. Finally got Alakazam, which completes my Gen 1 Pokedex minus the legendaries and region-restricted Pokemon. Whoo-hoo!

For me, the cap is more that I was all excited. It's relatively easy to go nab the two nearby gyms late at night now, but after 5 hours I feel like they're wasting slots.

I have seen some theme gyms which is pretty cool. The nearby one was all flying pokemon today, and I've seen screencaps of 'nursery' gyms with people showing off their baby pokemon.

I'm enjoying it a lot. I went on a 1 (wo)man mission to raid a gym, but had to leave because I had stuff to do. At least I weakened two of their pokemon and I got the hang on how to fight in gyms. Ditto on gyms being constantly being taken over, but I find it more fun that way. Also the new gym layout looks fantastic.

My only complain so far is that the game freezes sometimes when I'm catching a pokemon, so I have to restart. :I

Speaking of Ditto, I caught one that had disguised itself as a hoothoot!

There are still tons of spoofers, I feel, taking over gyms and feeding berries to Pokemon without anyone in sight. I haven't seen much evidence that Niantic has really got anything up their sleeves to deal with the spoofing situation once and for all.

Personally, I'm bummed that I have no friends still interested in the game in the area, because I would love to participate in more raids. The other day a level four raid happened near me with a Snorlax as the boss, but I knew I had no chance to beat it solo. Nobody else ever seems to be around when I go for a raid :\

A lot of gyms are showing the wrong color, until you actually open it and then it'll show you the accurate team. Which can be rather confusing.

I've yet to try a raid, just because of where I live and no opportunity yet.

Oddly, the gym update seems to have had the opposite effect on the two gyms in walking distance to me - they used to flip pretty regularly but since the update have been steadily one color with pokemon stacked fully each time I go by. Maybe the update got more people in the area back into playing? Idk but it's frustrating because I used to be able to get some coins but now it's impossible.

But I guess overall I like it. At least it's something to mix it up.

I'm Team Harmony (not affiliated with any team) and even though I'm high-enough level to participate in raids... meh. Of the pokemon available as raid bosses, I have most of them and my town is so small, it would be impossible to beat the strongest, rarest ones anyway.

I'm looking forward to another spawning event instead (I'd love a poison-type or electric-type event; they are rare in my area).

How are you not affiliated? Don't you have to pick at level 5?

AYRT, extremely late but no, you do not have to pick a team. I am Lv 26 and on my profile it says "No Team." I'm unable to do gym stuff, but if I click on a gym on accident, I just close and reopen the app to get the "pick a team" prompt to go away.
