mind sharing more details? What was the author trying to say with the film?

And you could always pirate it so you're not giving money to it?

and there's no rules saying you have to get the same thing out of it. The creator can't control what people get from their work.

And some creators are sometimes so bad that they can end up sending messages opposite or different from the "point" they wanted to make.

that's exactly what I'm trying to trick my brain into believing, so thanks for reinforcing that. It's what I'm hoping I can tell myself. I really wanted to see this movie.

I would be willing to share it a bit later on, but I'm hoping I can get a bit of advice before I decide to turn this thread into an argument about the points I agree / disagree with. Kept it deliberately vague to retain focus.

Not paying is one thing, but I want to actually enjoy it, rather than mitigating the disappointment.

Its a film from last year called "the love witch" which liked to me to be a sexy horror in a 1960s filming style about a witch having lots ofnsexy and killing people. Totally my jam.

Then I read into it, and found that it's a film about how men are afraid of women, and women have more power than men. Suddenly I have all kinds of images about watching a film where every guy is a scumbag - Which isn't a problem in and of self, I watch loads of films where that is the case, but going into it knowing that's the point of the film, I worry if I'm going to be able to enjoy it, or if I'm going to feel like I'm being shit on for the entire length of the film.

That's probably all very stupid.
