Re: Is there a topic you don't bring up on fs because of how controversial your opinion is?

idk where you're getting that I don't think American capitalism needs to be reformed? I'm a Socialist, dude.

What you said in your post was that you were against people who were "extremely anti-capitalist" because of your first and second hand experience with "communism / socialized systems" specifically with reference to Venezuela and Russia.

With all apologies, I think I would have to have been a fucking mind reader to conclude from that post that you were a socialist. Like, you specifically cited socialist systems as a reason you were against anti-capitalists! That is a statement that is hard to reconcile with socialism, in my mind.

to be clear, when I say "socialist systems" in the second paragraph, I'm pointing towards your use of the phrase "socialized systems", not referring to Venezuela or Soviet Russia, both of which were very deeply flawed societies that no one should look to as a model of rectitude.

hope that was clear but.

Yeah, I'm against that sort of radical bullshit because I realize that taking economic systems to extremes is a fucking terrible idea. I think some degree of socialization is absolutely essential. I think some degree of govt oversight is essential. I also think that a healthy mostly-free market is essential.

Sorry, I've mentioned being a Socialist here before, and my comment was clearly not as clear as I thought it was.

yeahhhhhhh tbh I probably also came off the top way hotter than necessary, due to being frustrated about other stuff, so sorry about that

ahaha, don't worry about it. I figured when I posted in this thread that it might get heated)))

Fully agreed on all of this.

Just out of curiosity, do you have any opinions on the EZLN? To me it feels like the most compelling leftist social system - in some ways, one of the only ones that's genuinely compelling - but I'd be really interested in your thoughts.

Sorry I'm so late replying, this got kind of buried in my inbox.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think I'm familiar enough with them or the situation in Chiapas (or Mexico as a whole) to have any real opinions. From what very little amounts I do know, ia that it's very compelling. Their long-term success suggests that they are doing many things right. But, I don't know enough about it to really be a judge.

wait now I'm confused, your original post strongly implied that you were a capitalist

if you're not, why defend capitalism?

I think it's counterproductive to attack it. It takes focus away from achievable goals.

Plus, capitalism isn't the root of all evils in society. Just dismantling it doesn't actually solve any problems. Poverty and social inequality don't just disappear when you remove it. I also don't believe it's possible to have a healthy economy without it.

I'm a Socialist because I think a govt has a responsibility to provide basic care and resources to it's populace. Right now I live in a country that's failing to do that, and I think a greater degree of Socialism would help that. But I think that some balance has to be maintained or else it will fall into one extreme or the other. I don't want to live in the USSR again, but I also don't want to live in The Jungle, if that makes any sense.

I partly agree with you. I consider myself a socialist for the same reasons you do. But I don't think there's anything wrong with verbally attacking capitalism, because I find the philosophy behind it to be basically abhorrent. It's the idea that people should have free reign to do what they want, that a lucky few should be entitled to all the wealth and resources that exist, and if you're born into a situation where you don't have access to those resources, tough luck. I think fundamentally a society should care for all its people. I also don't think anybody has a plan to "dismantle capitalism" without replacing it with something because that's basically impossible; capitalism is by definition the lack of regulations on the economy; you can't take away something that isn't there. The only way to destroy capitalism is to actively put a different system in place.
