What's the difference between gay and straight people?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
How would you answer this question? I had a conversation today that sort of rubbed me the wrong way and I'm trying to figure out what kind of answers are normal...

Who they have sex with.

That's not true. That would mean celibate people are asexual and gay people who are in the closet and tried having having heterosexual sex are straight or bi (depending on if they've done it with a member of the same sex too).

The only definition that makes sense to me is based on the sex a person is attracted to.

Come to think of it, if you're asexual and in a long-term same-sex romance, can you be called gay?

I thought they were pretty widely known as homoromantic asexuals or gay aces (at least among people who are aware that asexuals exist). It's weird to see it brought up as some theoretical thing here.

I just don't know about it because I don't know anyone on Tumblr who identifies as that.

I think maybe it's one of those "up to the people to decide for themselves" kind of things? I know there's the "sexual orientation is about the gender of the people you want to date, sex is not required" camp and the "sexual and romantic orientation are two separate things and you can't call yourself gay unless you want to have sex with people of the same sex, regardless of if you want to be in a relationship with them" camp, who obviously disagree on who gets to call themselves gay so...I guess it just depends.

In what context? I mean, obviously in a sexual context there is one pretty glaring difference, but unless this is about a sexual preference thing then there is no difference.

Just...in general I suppose? The lady I was talking to said the difference is that gay people have "different types of sex" (and mainly focused on anal) which just kind of bugged me because there's no sexual act that gay people do that straight people don't also do. I don't know, it just rubbed me the wrong way.

NAYRT--bzuh? The difference between gay and straight people is who they're attracted to, not what kinds of sex they have. Although maybe that explains why some people think bisexual people are sex-crazed, they think they literally have more types of sex than anyone else.

Who they are attracted to? ??

that's literally it

what was the context of the conversation?

Re: What's the difference between gay and straight people?

The discussion was about all the "religious freedom" laws that allow people to discriminate against gay people if they say it's against their religion. The lady I was talking to said that it was okay to be gay because the only difference between straight people and gay people is that gay people have "different types of sex" (mainly anal). I mean, she obviously meant well because she said discriminating against gay people was bad, but the "types of sex" thing just kind of rubbed me the wrong way because even if she wasn't saying negative things it still had this vibe of "gay people and their weird sex habits" which just bugged me. IDK if that makes any sense.

I completely get what you're saying. Plus the pedant in me is screaming "but that's not true!" but now I've used up the daily allotment of pedantry I allow myself to voice to other people.

That is pretty much my daily struggle, lol. I'm constantly thinking "but that's not true!", "but that doesn't make any sense", "that's not what that word means!", etc. and it's really hard to keep my mouth shut about it sometimes.

That's how a lot of conservatives view gay people: they have teh buttsex. They going to hell.

But lots of straight people have butt sex. And not all gay people do.

I remember growing up my mom always listened to Focus on the Family and they had all these reasons for why gay people were awful. I believed most of them for a long time.

I remember one was that (I'm not making this up) a straight couple had modesty, whereas a gay couple, it was completely unknown. They were immoral. They'd walk around the house naked without shame.

Those gays...

Damn, I'm not gay and if no one's home but me I occasionally walk around the house naked, although it's usually more "walk from the bathroom to my bedroom after a shower" naked. But still. I didn't realize nudity inside your own house/apartment was supposed to be immoral.

haha, yeah wow. And she's also wrong because straight people can do anal, and gay people can have sexytiems other ways. The "gay = anal and anal = gay" notion is pretty ingrained and pretty annoying.

Gay people experience same sex attraction, and usually societal discrimination based on that attraction.

Generally speaking, women look nice. Men smell and sound very nice. (Other people it hits on an individual basis.)

Actually, I just read a passage from Down Among the Sticks and Bones that nails it:

The girl on the slab opens her eyes.

There are moments that change everything, mired in the mass of more ordinary time like insects caught in amber. Without them, life would be a tame, predictable thing. But with them, ah. With them, life does as it will, like lightning, like the wind that blows across the castle battlements, and none may stop it, and none may tell it "no." Jack (a girl) helps the girl off the slab, and everything is different and nothing will ever be the same.

The rest, is mechanics.

Probably the gender who of they find attractive. Considering the amount of men who have sex with men there are though...
