That's not true. That would mean celibate people are asexual and gay people who are in the closet and tried having having heterosexual sex are straight or bi (depending on if they've done it with a member of the same sex too).

The only definition that makes sense to me is based on the sex a person is attracted to.

I thought they were pretty widely known as homoromantic asexuals or gay aces (at least among people who are aware that asexuals exist). It's weird to see it brought up as some theoretical thing here.

I think maybe it's one of those "up to the people to decide for themselves" kind of things? I know there's the "sexual orientation is about the gender of the people you want to date, sex is not required" camp and the "sexual and romantic orientation are two separate things and you can't call yourself gay unless you want to have sex with people of the same sex, regardless of if you want to be in a relationship with them" camp, who obviously disagree on who gets to call themselves gay so...I guess it just depends.
