No the letter says if you are white you can't stan the film or its characters the way you normally do. You must only appreciate them from an appropriate and respectful distance.

Personally I don't have an issue with calling a character from this movie "bae" or "my wife/husband", but I agree with the ownership and infantilism language being a problem as it relates to black people.

When the same terms are used equally regardless of race, then why is it so much different for just one? That doesn't make any sense.

Fandom doesn't exist in a fucking vacuum and is still subject to historical and societal context. I would also add that just because fandom as a whole does something doesn't make that something okay.

Okay, but if I'm the type of person who is prone to talking like that regardless, I have two options: a) walk on eggshells, making sure to scrub any sort of the normal fandom from my way of speaking or b) say screw it and watch a movie with White characters with whom I can use all the diminuitives and familial tones I want. If this movie has zero fandom because you've scared off everyone who might want to participate I'm going to laugh and laugh and laugh, and cry a little because we are never going to have a fun and active fandom for minority characters, and then I'm going to laugh some more.

I interpret it as the person writing the letter understanding the context of such terms when used to describe people of color.

All this letter is saying is "Hey white people, please fucking think about how you're engaging with these characters that are a direct result of black culture and how that type of engagement might effect people who's culture that is before you fucking engage like that."

I know white fragility makes statement like that hard to take, but being hard to take doesn't make it wrong.

How it might affect people from that culture? Hmm, let's see. Being able to have a character from within your culture that you can squee about with your friends? You're right, that sounds terrible, better start turning fandom into a toxic cesspit from now so that all the fun stuff is replaced with passive-aggressive 'friendly reminder' posts and cyberbullying dressed up as activism.

Because goodness knows I'd much rather have my culture associated with driving people to suicide than with people squeeing.
