Is anything "going down" in the fandom so much as this one person on tumblr being a shit?

I suspect it's that one person, being a shit.

It may be one post written by one person, but thousands of people have reblogged and added their own commentary both agreeing and disagreeing. How many people have to be involved for it to be considered a significant fandom issue?

Yes, I would say that thousands of people losing their shit over this post does point to a serious problem for fandom, mostly that those thousands of people need to take a chill pill (literally if that's your thing) and step away from the keyboard.

I give Tumblr 0 benefit of the doubt when it comes to not acting like words I don't want to type out because I might get banned. Tumblr SJ is to SJ what Gamergate is to ethics in journalism: using a good cause to justify being garbage people.

I would say, with Tumblr, it's less about how many likes/reblogs something gets and more about how long those notions and conversations stick around.
