For me, Moana was enjoyable when I watched it in the theater but I think it was overhyped to me so I didn't think it was as amazing as others were saying. I especially didn't think You're Welcome was all that great.

However, I did like it enough to grab it on DVD and have been playing it pretty much everyday. The songs have grown on me, and it's very rewatchable. It's definitely my favorite of the new Disney movies in the last few years. I haven't rewatched any of them so often.

Yeah, I did not like that song either. It was pretty weak compared to the others

(Anonymous) 2017-06-29 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think You're Welcome is better than it's Frozen counterpart, In Summer.

But the character designs are so ugly. They really should have gone for more conventional character models.

WTF? What are you even talking about?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-28 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Designs that don't look all squashed and mooshed. That is what Disney does best and what they should have stuck with, like they did with Frozen and the other movies that hark back to the non-CG canon.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-29 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
lol yeah they should definitely look like the dead eyed skeletal dolls from Frozen

Dooooon't feed the troll.

Same

I loved Moana so much. The songs and the visuals are stunning.

Out of all the CGI Disney movies this one has probably been my favourite, I just really liked everything about it.

The 2D movies are still my absolute favourites but I think that's because I was raised on them so I'm always going to be biased towards them(that and I just like 2D animation better, but the CGI stuff is getting really good).

I still can't get over how much better they are at rendering hair in CGI now.

THE WET HAIR. HOW AMAZING WAS THAT??

Sorry, but I really was just absolutely floored at how it looked wet, when in Tangled(which is a few years old now tbf) the 'wet' hair didn't really look it. But in Moana it 100% did, it was amazing.

The weird thing for me is that there were parts in Moana where the CGI is so good it gave me uncanny valley. Something about the elasticity of the faces... idk. Maybe because their bodies were more humanly proportioned, so the non-human bits stood out more? IDK.

See, a named user gets it. They just look wrong. Trad character designs, please.

It didn't do that for me, but I get what you're talking about... I know there was a recent thing that was CGI animated and it hit too much into the Uncanny Valley for me to like it. Can't think of it though.

I don't think hardly anybody but me had that reaction to Moana, at least among the people I've talked to. *shrug* My brain's weird, I guess.

Good luck on finding non-CGI 2D. Almost no one in the industry wants to go back to an analog workflow.

Even the stop-motion folks are designing digitally, rendering expression tweens using 3D printers, and then photographing back to digital where they handle effects and compositing. South Park had one non-CGI episode that went way over budget.

I don't suppose Ghibli has anything new coming out then?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-06-28 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Last year, Ghibli open-sourced Toonz, the software they used to produce everything from Mononoke forward.

Oh I know that 2D animation has long since gone the way of the dodo, which is a shame but oh well.

And tbf a lot of the Disney movie I love utilised CGI animation because it was easier to build an entire 3D cathedral than hand-draw that shit so I know the two mediums have been intersecting for a while.

3D is overall cheaper and easier to do and I accept that. (Doesn't mean I don't miss 2D but it's pointless to be angry over, which I'm not).

CGI != 3D. 2D animation is still produced, using CGI tools because analog workflows for animation really, really, REALLY suck. For that matter, analog 3D workflows are even more fiddly.
