(Anonymous) 2017-06-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)However, I did like it enough to grab it on DVD and have been playing it pretty much everyday. The songs have grown on me, and it's very rewatchable. It's definitely my favorite of the new Disney movies in the last few years. I haven't rewatched any of them so often.

The 2D movies are still my absolute favourites but I think that's because I was raised on them so I'm always going to be biased towards them(that and I just like 2D animation better, but the CGI stuff is getting really good).

Sorry, but I really was just absolutely floored at how it looked wet, when in Tangled(which is a few years old now tbf) the 'wet' hair didn't really look it. But in Moana it 100% did, it was amazing.

Even the stop-motion folks are designing digitally, rendering expression tweens using 3D printers, and then photographing back to digital where they handle effects and compositing. South Park had one non-CGI episode that went way over budget.

And tbf a lot of the Disney movie I love utilised CGI animation because it was easier to build an entire 3D cathedral than hand-draw that shit so I know the two mediums have been intersecting for a while.
3D is overall cheaper and easier to do and I accept that. (Doesn't mean I don't miss 2D but it's pointless to be angry over, which I'm not).

CGI != 3D. 2D animation is still produced, using CGI tools because analog workflows for animation really, really, REALLY suck. For that matter, analog 3D workflows are even more fiddly.
