CHARACTERS/SHIPS YOU USED TO LOVE

(Anonymous) 2017-06-28 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some characters/ships that you used to love but now dislike (for reasons other than the fans or the fandom)?

Tony Stark. Mostly because of how much he is in the movies. But lately I have gotten annoyed by all the Tony whump fic that demonizes Steve in the 'Steve Rogers' tag. I've not seen the opposite but maybe it is there. At least they tag it.

I suspect a lot of this is in reaction to the reverse treatment of these characters in the comic book fandom, especially in Civil War. :/

Honestly, I think it is just Tony Stark super fans. I just wish there was something they could tag it with something like they do on Tumblr. Never thought I would say that!

lmao Stucky fans will literally post in Tony fans' ask boxes about what a horrible person he is. Nobody even writes out character or ship names anymore cause ppl will search for them just to harass others. Not condoning it but no wonder Tony fans are lashing out. This whole fandom is fucked & everyone gets hate for no reason.

Tumblr isn't AO3. I don't see any of that pb Tumblr because I am fastidious about who I follow. But I've yet to see the amount of 'not Tony Stark friendly' 'team Iron Man sucks' etc, in the AO3 tags.

Also, the MCU Fandom is a dream compared to most huge fandoms.

Freeform: Tony Stark is an idiot ‎(5)

I see them pop up. There might also be fewer because since tumblr fandom decided Tony is 100% wrong and awful and also a pedophile there's not much reason for people to tag things they consider canon compliant. Where as people writing pro-Tony stuff feel they need to label it.

Considering just recently I've seen this - http://imgur.com/gallery/y4uR7 and a tumblr post insisting that Tony had the best childhood out of the Avengers so he didn't get a 'pass' for bad adult behavior.

How many of those are jokes? Because some sound like the while 'character I love is trash'.

And I see lots of people supporting Tony. More so, I see few people talking about the sides in Civil War. It sounds like you might need to change some of the people you follow.

Uh...what is that imgur link and what are you trying to prove with it? They are clearly making a joke about how fucked up the republican health care plan is (and how preexisting conditions will fuck people over). And except for Thor (who people seem to forget is an Avenger sometimes), Tony probably did have the best childhood out of all of them?

.... Except they entirely forgot that the Iron Man movie starts with Tony getting a fist sized hole carved into his chest?

Who forgot that? That did not happen when he was a child. And literally every Avenger has some sort of trauma. Steve was frozen and lost everyone he loved (also grew up poor and sick). Natasha was forcibly sterilized and raised as a killer. Bruce was tortured by his father. Thor had to fight his psychopathic brother. Clint was possessed by said brother.

They all have horrible trauma. Tony isn't special in that regard.

Naruto/Sasuke, mainly because I started really disliking Sasuke and didn't want him to end up with anybody.

Armin/Annie used to be my favorite pairing from Attack on Titan. As I got more involved with the series Annie quickly became my favorite character, which lead me to resent Armin a little bit because he manipulated her (with good reason, I am just totally biased). It doesn't help that most of the fics I have read for the pair have some aspect of Armin "saving" Annie.

spoilers for .hack//G.U.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-29 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I shipped Ovan/Haseo from .hack//G.U. really hard for a while, mostly due to //ROOTS, though certainly through the first couple of games-- I even kept it up after the Big Reveal of Ovan's massive betrayal for a while, but. I don't know. The more I thought about it the more sour it felt on my tongue. I don't even necessarily dislike manipulation in my ships, but Ovan really went beyond the pale in manipulating Haseo (and Shino, for that matter), and I just couldn't make it gel that what happened to Aina justified it. Lots of people were in comas, Aina wasn't special in that sense.

I do think that Haseo had to be manipulated into joining G.U., though. He never would have if he hadn't been so desperate to avenge Shino, and G.U. gave him a direct route to "Tri-Edge"-- but there was no reason to keep pushing once he was there. Once Haseo figured out that Azure Kite wasn't actually Tri-Edge, he was already in too deep and was willingly helping. They were actively looking for a way to stop the AIDA infection and save the Lost Ones (which would include Aina), so Ovan pressing on Haseo to a breaking point was just cruelty.

The whole thing really soured me on Ovan as a character entirely, and I definitely couldn't keep shipping Ovan/Haseo after that.

I used to LOVE Winry and Ed/Winry from FMA (the manga, long before it ended and became canon; I got soured before that) but the longer it ran, the less comfortable I got with her "YOU RUINED MY AUTOMAIL AGAIN! *BEATS*"... thing? Part of the problem was that I don't even know what to call it. If it was nothing but a "running gag" I could probably have been okay with it, but it was like it was halfway that and halfway a serious part of her character. I stopped being able to buy that she didn't really care more about her automail than about Ed and Al. I just don't think she ended up being the kind of character Arakawa was trying to write her as.

But everyone else in the fandom loves her and thinks she's like the best female character of all time so whatever.

To each their own. I can only remember a handful of times she did that in the manga, most of which from the earlier arcs, especially since they were separated for large parts of the story. I know there are some in the fandom who are REALLY incensed about this issue but I just don't see the big deal tbh.

Alucard from Hellsing. When I was first in the fandom I thought he was really awesome but over time I got attached to other characters and didn't really care about him anymore.

Elsa from Frozen.

I still love her, but nowhere near when the movie came out. Her stans are just fucking annoying. Stans are horrible in general, but jfc, some of them act like you kicked a puppy if you don't believe she's the best thing since sliced bread. And god help you if you have an anxiety disorder and didn't relate to her. =\ At least my doc and psychiatrist fervently believe anxiety can manifest differently for everyone.

Grissom from CSI. I thought he was amazing and hilarious and fun when I watched the show years ago. But I went back to rewatch recently and he was just kind of insufferably smug.

I kind of liked where they were going with Jackson/Lydia towards the end of Teen Wolf season 2, but then he got written out, so the potential for redemption and the two of them building a healthier relationship went with him. I definitely have an OTP qualifier tag for them on my blog, but it was a bad relationship when judged by real world standards and I lost interest in the idea of it overall with him out of the picture. I stopped watching the show a year later, but Jackson/Lydia didn't cross my mind often in that time period where I was still watching and he was gone.

I stopped watching The Mindy Project mid-season three (though I often think about returning to it someday eventually) and I was...really not interested in the Mindy/Danny relationship by that point in the show. Most of the things I've heard about it since make me even less interested, but I was really invested at the time. Similarly, a lot of the things I've heard, and some of the things we were seeing before I stopped watching...I didn't like Danny as a character as much as I had in the past.

I used to love Emma Swan, who had some issues but took no shit, stood up for people she didn't know, and was willing to learn to trust again, and loved her son and stood up for herself and made friends and found her family. Then Emma became all about Hook, all the damn time, and stopped giving a fuck for anyone who wasn't Hook, herself, sometimes her son or parents or her son's other mom, but strangers? Random people? People Hook didn't like? Fuck them. Her self-respect? Poof, gone. Her ability to function outside her codependent relationship with Hook? Meh. And it would still have been gross, but not as bad, if the writers hadn't presented "married to Hook in a white wedding musical episode simpering Sandra Dee" Emma as the best, most fulfilled, happiest Emma that ever was, after her "walls" were "torn down" by someone who'd gotten frustrated that she didn't fall for him right away and just "knew" despite her repeated denials that she wanted him. Blech.

And yes, I kind of ship SwanFire and SwanQueen and SwanQueenFire. I ship a lot of Emma pairings that aren't Captain Swan. But I didn't used to ship Emma with anyone. I only started because almost *anyone* would be better for her than Hook, around the end of season 3 when it got super obvious he'd won some morbid game of last man standing and with it, Emma.
