spoilers for .hack//G.U.

I shipped Ovan/Haseo from .hack//G.U. really hard for a while, mostly due to //ROOTS, though certainly through the first couple of games-- I even kept it up after the Big Reveal of Ovan's massive betrayal for a while, but. I don't know. The more I thought about it the more sour it felt on my tongue. I don't even necessarily dislike manipulation in my ships, but Ovan really went beyond the pale in manipulating Haseo (and Shino, for that matter), and I just couldn't make it gel that what happened to Aina justified it. Lots of people were in comas, Aina wasn't special in that sense.

I do think that Haseo had to be manipulated into joining G.U., though. He never would have if he hadn't been so desperate to avenge Shino, and G.U. gave him a direct route to "Tri-Edge"-- but there was no reason to keep pushing once he was there. Once Haseo figured out that Azure Kite wasn't actually Tri-Edge, he was already in too deep and was willingly helping. They were actively looking for a way to stop the AIDA infection and save the Lost Ones (which would include Aina), so Ovan pressing on Haseo to a breaking point was just cruelty.

The whole thing really soured me on Ovan as a character entirely, and I definitely couldn't keep shipping Ovan/Haseo after that.
