While I'm not going to say race doesn't play a part of it for some folks, I think it really does have to do with the Captain not being the star. If she was the captain, I suspect it would be more accepting because the captain is always the star of these shows. This is the fandom that had a black commander in charge and a woman in charge and with few exceptions, accepted them openly.
