I don't know if it was snark as much as throwing evangelicals a bone, and telling them it was okay to enjoy it cause the Asgardians are not "real" gods.

I got that impression, too. That Marvel is trying to portray the Asgardians' divinity as being powered through some kind of science instead of being, well, divine. Because blasphemy! Whatever. Dissing Norse religion is pretty cheap, I think, if you're going to be relying on it to populate your comics/movies. Clarke's law aside.

Who knows. I didn't take it seriously, though, and Steve really doesn't seem to have much in the way of religion, so.....

I notice people tend to excuse Steve's behavior even if it's the tiniest thing. It's not necessary. He doesn't need absolute purity of soul to be awesome.

I think it was a fatuous, small-minded comment. There are other religions in the world, you know? Not just Norse gods. He can have a bit of bigotry. It would be surprising if he didn't. He's human.

Also, he's allowed to be a little thrown to discover the existence of actual gods that aren't his Christian God.

...........not excusing?
It just didn't strike me as 'preachy', like OP said.
*shrug*

He doesn't seem religious to me *at all* - I'd peg him for an atheist, frankly, or at least agnostic.

"There's only one God, Ma'am, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't dress like that."

How is that not religious? Or preachy? How does he know how God dresses?

Anyway, sorry. I'll let it go. I just, I love Steve so much but that irked me. His religion isn't mine, you see.

It was a throw-away line that Whedon thought would be funny. It was a 'trailer' line. He never spoke about religion again, even confronted by Thor, Loki, and the knowledge of Asgard. So i didn't take it seriously.

I'm an atheist. I *detest* religion in my media. And it...just didn't bother me.

So, you know, to each their own. Sorry it bothered you so much.

Well that has been mentioned in the movies, in the comics (which I know is not always on the same page) there have been a few mentions of his religion and it's hard to see him as something other than protestant.

He always struck me as a reformed Catholic, in that - he lost his religion early on and became an atheist, but he grew up a good Irish Catholic boy (or, as good as he could possibly be, considering it's Steve).

I just can't divorce the movie version from the comic version when there is no conflict, and the comics have showed him to be an active protestant (http://www.adherents.com/lit/comics/CaptainAmerica.html)

Ah, well. I've never read the comics, so, all my knowledge of him is the movie 'verse and various Marvel and Wiki pages. Thanks for the link!

OP

If Cap was brought up Protestant, it sure would explain why little Steve Rogers got beat up so much (if he were Northern Irish/Protestant and living in a primarily Irish Catholic area of Brooklyn).
