Re: Death Note

It's very very different. All the character (except for Ryuk (the death god) bare no resemblance to their source material conterpart.

That being said, I am still looking forward to this train wreck. If this was the only adaptation Death Note ever got, I would probably be super pissed. But there are so many out there that this will be a blip.

Yeah, I agree with you. Death Note has had so many adaptations already that I'm actually sort of curious about the direction this one will go. It can't ruin the prestige of the series or anything at this point; DN's position is pretty secure.
So I actually kind of like the changes, if only in the sense that I like that there are so many changes to analyze.

It does seem like Ryuk will be the only character who remotely resembles his original.

Which, you know, I'm not inherently against changing things for an adaptation, I just don't get why. Light seems like a completely different guy, so does Misa. Can't say much about L yet, but probably. But their original characters are still completely possible to portray even in an American setting. An interview talked about them wanting to make it "darker and edgier" than the original, and I see they've added lots of action and explosions, but I'm worried it's at the expense of the psychological battle between L and Light.

Plus, looks like they made Light straight and romantic with Misa. Mega boo.

...Uh. Doesn't he... Lead her to believe he's into her? Also I don't see any canon on his sexuality at all.

Well, sort of, in the original. It's kind of a big deal that he either flat out says he doesn't like her but will pretend to be her boyfriend so she doesn't go on killing rampages, or alternatively pretend to like her to keep her in line. Making Light canonically interested in Misa and have some kind of relationship with her, or even just not despise her as a person, is a huge breakaway from the original and that's what the trailer seems to suggest.

Original Light never once demonstrates any interest in women, in fact, just the opposite (all the beautiful women throwing themselves at him, he actively talks about hating).

I got the impression he had sex with both Misa and the reporter lady (Takada?) on the reg, but only for the sake of manipulating them.

I'm looking forward to it too and I'm cautiously optimistic that it'll be okay at the very least. I'm wondering if it'll be better or worse than the drama (which I thought was kinda terrible).

I'm okay with the Americanization since DN can happen anywhere, but I'm not very convinced with Light. Like anon said up there, he looks like the outcast who gets bullied (and then he seeks vengeance).

Will save my opinion on it until it comes out, though.
