Entertainment News!

Mostly because I wanted to share the Death Note trailer. Fans, how different is it from the anime (other than the Americanization).

There was a rumor that Star Wars Anthology 2020 was going to be announced today but....that was probably BS, so close to D23.

I think this comes from a report from Lucas Film that said they would make an announcement in June about that movie and today's the last day of June. You are right that it would make more sense to announce it at D3, although now that Han Solo is such a mess, they might've wanted to release that info in June so as not to take away from Han Solo at D3 and now they need something else to talk about.

That's right, I was remembering incorrectly. Decision =/= announcement. Another fourteen days then...

From the trailer, I feel like it has the potential to be decent. I really like Ryuk, but I'm unsure about L (love that the actor is sitting like L though) and Light and whatever's going on between him and that girl. No one suspects Light in the anime because he's perfect in every possible way, but this Light looks like on of those outcast kids who gets bullied a lot. I dunno, maybe they're going for the "nice kid reaches a breaking point" angle.

I saw that trailer. It was terrible. Double glaringly bad since I'm 3/4 of the way through the anime.

The nice thing about Death Note is that it's got a number of good adaptations out already. I recently rewatched the anime and was pleased to see that it's held up really well. I read the manga as well, but it's kind of a slog to get through because there's so much text for a manga and it's strangely off-putting. I much prefer the anime, though I did like two of the Japanese live action movies, but I really didn't like the drama that came out a few years ago. I don't think I even finished it. I'm curious to see if this adaptation is better or worse than the drama.

That's interesting. I didn't bother with the anime after the first couple episodes because I didn't think they did enough to adapt it from manga to show. So much of the anime seems like it might as well still be panels on a page because it was holding on single frames so much. I much prefer the manga.

I liked the live action movies too though.

Season 14 will be Supernatural's last season. I actually thought it would go on forever.

Wow O_O
Man, I'm half-tempted to watch that season now, just to see them wrap things up.

Do you have any source other than "Blasting News" which isn't the most legit sounding source I've ever heard of.

Ehhhh don't mind me taking that with a grain of salt. They said 10 would be the last too.

They've been saying this for a while; they want to get to 300 episodes, which will take them to the middle of season 14. (Which could be a shortened season then.)

What? Noooooooooo. I don't watch but I'm so used to hearing about it.

Re: Death Note

It's very very different. All the character (except for Ryuk (the death god) bare no resemblance to their source material conterpart.

That being said, I am still looking forward to this train wreck. If this was the only adaptation Death Note ever got, I would probably be super pissed. But there are so many out there that this will be a blip.

Yeah, I agree with you. Death Note has had so many adaptations already that I'm actually sort of curious about the direction this one will go. It can't ruin the prestige of the series or anything at this point; DN's position is pretty secure.
So I actually kind of like the changes, if only in the sense that I like that there are so many changes to analyze.

Re: Entertainment News!

It does seem like Ryuk will be the only character who remotely resembles his original.

Which, you know, I'm not inherently against changing things for an adaptation, I just don't get why. Light seems like a completely different guy, so does Misa. Can't say much about L yet, but probably. But their original characters are still completely possible to portray even in an American setting. An interview talked about them wanting to make it "darker and edgier" than the original, and I see they've added lots of action and explosions, but I'm worried it's at the expense of the psychological battle between L and Light.

Plus, looks like they made Light straight and romantic with Misa. Mega boo.

...Uh. Doesn't he... Lead her to believe he's into her? Also I don't see any canon on his sexuality at all.

Re: Entertainment News!

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sort of, in the original. It's kind of a big deal that he either flat out says he doesn't like her but will pretend to be her boyfriend so she doesn't go on killing rampages, or alternatively pretend to like her to keep her in line. Making Light canonically interested in Misa and have some kind of relationship with her, or even just not despise her as a person, is a huge breakaway from the original and that's what the trailer seems to suggest.

Original Light never once demonstrates any interest in women, in fact, just the opposite (all the beautiful women throwing themselves at him, he actively talks about hating).

I'm looking forward to it too and I'm cautiously optimistic that it'll be okay at the very least. I'm wondering if it'll be better or worse than the drama (which I thought was kinda terrible).

I'm okay with the Americanization since DN can happen anywhere, but I'm not very convinced with Light. Like anon said up there, he looks like the outcast who gets bullied (and then he seeks vengeance).

Will save my opinion on it until it comes out, though.

I don't get how they can make the utterly perfect choice of Dafoe as Ryuk and then everything else (seem to) be so different..?

Re: Entertainment News!

(Anonymous) 2017-07-01 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Willem Dafoe as Ryuk is one of those absolutely breathtakingly perfect choices.

Everything else is a little confusing. Though I'm not insanely adverse to any of the casting choices (except in that I wish Light had been Japanese-American, but oh well), I think it's more how the directing is portraying the characters that feels so different.
