Ages ago, it wasn't that unusual for an unknown to be cast in a leading role. If they made it through the casting process and brought something potentially fresh and interesting to the role, they were in.

Presumably, that's what happened here. Good for the casting director for taking a leap of faith.

True, though lbr, Auli'i Cravalho burst fully formed from the head of a Disney Imagineer. She and the Rock could've done the movie in person and it would be the same, give or take a chicken and proximity to lava.

My point is, they're complaining about this because it's something to complain about while giving others they like passes.

They're apples and oranges examples, though. She obviously already had the vocals to pull off the songs, and Disney has a history of hiring inexperienced voice actors who might need more direction/help.
