I hate the "acting experience" bit. How the fuck are people supposed to get experience when they're stuck as extras because they have no experience?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a whole layer of roles between extra and star - supporting cast.

You start small and work your way up, how the fuck do you think you do it? You don't just get handed blockbuster roles. It's stupid. The fact that she did well is aside the point, it's a fluke and it shouldn't have happened.

This whole sub-thread is ridiculous. The history of the acting profession is full of people who got lucky breaks. It sucks of you're a talented actor always laboring in obscurity, but that's life. Planet Earth is not a perfect meritocracy. Sure, some very successful actors went to formal acting school, or worked their way up from smaller parts, but there's more than one way to skin a cat, and even those actors got lucky breaks, too, or they wouldn't be as successful. The arts are about talent and skill foremost, not about education, years of experience, and technical knowledge.

Besides, even in other fields where education and experience matters and there is far less expectation of natural talent, logging a certain number of years doesn't necessarilly make you better at your job than someone who has logged somewhat fewer years, and lucky breaks (and things like nepotism) happen all the time.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
How does she not look the part? She looks exactly the part to me. Not all strong women look the same.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really have an issue with the casting, but... it's really not that close to how Diana is pictured in comics.

I don't hear people bitching about Lynda Carter. Btw I loved her Wonder Woman as a kid.

I'm with you, anon. I think she looks perfect. I admit I had a few doubts when she was cast, but now I think it's one of the best castings in recent superhero movie history.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ages ago, it wasn't that unusual for an unknown to be cast in a leading role. If they made it through the casting process and brought something potentially fresh and interesting to the role, they were in.

Presumably, that's what happened here. Good for the casting director for taking a leap of faith.

You don't see people whining about a first-time actress for Moana and her not having "enough acting experience."

Even the non-athlete Amazons. Robin Wright got ripped af for that movie and it was glorious.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just really uncomfortable with some of the stuff that edges into body-shaming. Some women just don't bulk up very much. My mom lifts weights, and she can lift a fair amount, mostly free weights, and looking at her arms you would really not think that she lifts.
Gal Gadot trained for the part. Some actors end up doing really unhealthy stuff to look right, like Hugh Jackman who really wanted to be done with having to look right for Wolvering (and even he looks way more jacked in later films than he did in the first one). I'm glad she wasn't pushed to doing potentially unhealthy things for the role.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that people who complain about her not looking the part mean that they wanted her to become a bodybuilder for the role. I think they mean that they would have preferred an actress who was naturally more muscular-looking.

Let's not pretend that the reason was she was cast instead of a muscular-looking woman was because the filmmakers were trying to be inclusive towards women who don't bulk up when they work out.

They made smart casting choices with the rest of the actors and they basically carried her through this movie. That is how they did it. Thank god for Chris Pine, man deserves an Oscar for this movie.

"Doesn't look the part" varies wildly when you're dealing with a character who's had so many looks.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-01 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Beautiful as Aphrodite, Wise as Athena, Swifter than Hermes. and Stronger than Hercules."

I agree that im a casting sense, being a "looker" is not the most important aspect of that. The aspect of Aphrodite, found in women in general, reflects an ordinary beauty. But acting ability is of great importance. Gadot is about the right height, about the right look, and has shown a facility as an actress in general and in action movies. I think you're going to have to relax. Movies are often cast with someone seen in other movies.

It was planned to be Sandra Bullock twenty years ago, and that would have been something. I can deal with it being Gal Gadot.

The casting people probably just assumed she would be able to bulk up, because lots of actors can and do. People who look really muscular in movies don't necessarily go around looking like that all the time. Shortly before he was in Gladiator, Russel Crowe was in some movie where he was all pudgy looking. People change their looks for roles all the time - weight, muscle, hair, tan... When she couldn't bulk up all that much, oh well, too late. Doesn't mean she was purposeful cast to not be muscular.

My problem with Gal's casting, from a "body type" standpoint has nothing to do with thinking that her body is in any way "wrong" or "gross" or whatever. It's to do with the fact that if there was ever a character with which the standard "size 0 supermodel body type" casting mold could have been broken it was Wonder Woman and I was, and still am despite loving the movie and Gal in role, very disappointed they choose not to even try.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-02 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got no issue with her acting.

But I'm still not cool with her casting because yes, she looks the classic thin Hollywood hottie and I don't feel bad about thinking that's uncool. Commenters here are saying how there's nothing wrong with being thin and lean muscle and all that, and that's totally true, but I'm not an idiot. We all know why Hollywood cast a traditional Hollywood hottie with little discernible muscle - because men like that and it sells. Even a movie that should be about a truly badass woman who doesn't give one flying f*ck about the male gaze, still cares a great deal about the male gaze, and that's why I'm not cool with it.
