My problem with people who get pretentious about being book lovers is that they will make assumptions about other people's reading based on their own narrow ideas of what a person who loves to read is like. They're all about "Look how many books I own! I love old books! I love tea!" They wouldn't necessarilly recognize someone like Patty from Ghostbusters as an avid reader, but lots of people have jobs like that with a lot of down time, or long commutes where they don't have to drive, and those people do a lot of reading during those times.

I own plenty of books, but I very rarely buy them anymore, both because of the expense and because I just don't want lots of stuff piling up in my home. I go to the library all the time, and whenever a take a walk, I check out some of the many Little Free Libraries in my neighborhood (and when I take one of those books, I pass it on once I'm done). To look at my bookshelves, you might think I've barely read anything since college, but what I own is not all I've read. My brother almost exclusively buys ebooks and reads them on his phone (and he can turn the screen black and the text red for reading before bed). Not everyone who loves to read dreams of a wood-panneled library full of books shelved floor-to-ceiling.
