I vastly prefer audiovisual media to writing. I know people who are smug avid readers but are garbage when it come to interpret visual cues.

I also want to know why when the subject of liking reading comes up, people love to assume you hate TV. There's nothing stopping people from enjoying both?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-02 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe people have trouble understanding that other people can enjoy media in completely different formats? If they strongly prefer books or strongly prefer TV, it's tough to understand liking both?

I think it comes from the same place mentioned in the secret: There are quite a few pseudo-intelectuals who like to emphasise how much they love~reading~ and ~book~ and that's clearly so much superior than watching TV because TV is trash for plebs.

I used to be like that when I was a teenager. Such dumbass entitlement. LOL There are still a lot of people who read that do feel like they're a cut above anyone who doesn't like to read, and I agree OP, it really doesn't make them better or anything else to those who don't enjoy reading.

I encourage people to read more, because I do think it's important and can be a great way to expand your vocabulary and your world view, however, I don't think I'm better or smarter than people who don't like to read. I understand for most people who don't like to read they find it difficult to sit down and read when they prefer to visually see something or be physically active to feel entertained or focused.

This is very annoying to me too. Also its companion piece "The world doesn't understand me because I'd rather be home with a book than out at some party!" (I've seen so many people say that that I'm pretty sure the world is used to it by now.)

You're probably trolling, but reading actually makes you smarter.

What's the main tool in schools? Books, digital or paper, for a reason. Written language; transferable knowledge past borders and time, is the most efficient teaching technology to date. Giving yourself a larger vocabulary makes your brain able to handle more nuances and thus makes you able to think smarter on more things. Aren't you lucky.

Fucking SAME. Yes, I enjoy books. Does it somehow make me this brilliant smarter person than people who don't read as often? No. Ugh, I hate book readers that pull that shit.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-02 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that people who like to read are automatically smarter, but I do tend to lose a little respect for anyone who says they hate reading and never do it. And yes, I have met people who told me that.

But OP, how else are fangirl nerds going to feel superior about themselves?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
My problem with people who get pretentious about being book lovers is that they will make assumptions about other people's reading based on their own narrow ideas of what a person who loves to read is like. They're all about "Look how many books I own! I love old books! I love tea!" They wouldn't necessarilly recognize someone like Patty from Ghostbusters as an avid reader, but lots of people have jobs like that with a lot of down time, or long commutes where they don't have to drive, and those people do a lot of reading during those times.

I own plenty of books, but I very rarely buy them anymore, both because of the expense and because I just don't want lots of stuff piling up in my home. I go to the library all the time, and whenever a take a walk, I check out some of the many Little Free Libraries in my neighborhood (and when I take one of those books, I pass it on once I'm done). To look at my bookshelves, you might think I've barely read anything since college, but what I own is not all I've read. My brother almost exclusively buys ebooks and reads them on his phone (and he can turn the screen black and the text red for reading before bed). Not everyone who loves to read dreams of a wood-panneled library full of books shelved floor-to-ceiling.

Blech.

I'll admit, I do find it *weird* when people say they don't read anything at all, but that's because i love it so much, and spend so much of my time doing, and always have.

I would only judge them if they said all books were dumb and/or boring or that reading was stupid.

I could date a non-reader, but if they were always bugging me about my reading and wanting me to stop and like - come watch tv with them or something, that would suck and probably become a 'this isn't working' thing.

a lot of stupid people read too. a lot of people, in general, read.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-03 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Lmaoooo at the wank this secret generated being over the top and the reading makes you smart!!! crowd. News flash, the brain was never meant to read. There are no reading parts of the brain and the concept of reading is a fairly recent idea in human history. Intelligence has nothing to do with reading but rather how knowledge is transferred and digested, hence why a number of intelligent people are functionally illiterate.
