Cover art really is depressing. It feels like publishers are cutting corners by relying heavily on stock photos, generic models and photoshop rather than hiring artists. Crappy cover art has always been with us, of course, but I really miss those days when you'd pick up a book just because it was so goddamn pretty you wanted to see what it was about!

+ one billion

... I swear, if I see another generic romance novel type template for a book cover that has f£%k all to do with the romance section of the book store, I'm going to scream so hard, they'll hear me on the moon.

NA

As a self published author, the buy a book cover websites are overwhelming and yeah, not that great, geared towards romance or twilight-esque covers and don't represent at all what I write. It is very generic.

The worst thing is I befriended a romance novelist who 'gifted' me with one of these covers and got offended when I made my own using the idea as a template to match the fact I write "Adventure" and not "romance." (Plus, scifi in a completely different CITY than on the cover she 'gave' me. Florida is NOT South Dakota.)

I mean, I don't mind a sexy guy on the cover, the protag is a sexy male werewolf. As long as it is the back of said guy, not the front. But it's an ADVENTURE novel. So, I'm sticking with my tattoo art that I can draw myself for now.

Selfpublished authors are what is trashing the literary scene right now. In this industry the traditional barriers actually provided some form of quality control and prevented a tide of spam overwhelming it. You vanity press "authors" are a nightmare.
