At least for Funkos, A) they're cheap (not when you buy....like fifty but in general) and B) a lot of the time, that's the only merchandise some properties get.

I could have bought a 200$ custom Jupiter Ascending Barbie...but I bought the tiny Funko instead for 10$. I know Tomorrowland and Book of Life had some action figures but they really weren't widely available at the time. And with the release of the movie, besides a plush, the Captain Underpants funkos were the first merchandise in about ten years outside of the books that came out.

My grail funko is constantly rising to over 100$ and I'm like "That's honestly ridiculous, even if I had the extra cash, if it wasn't from selling stuff, I wouldn't get that."
