I feel you on that. I'm not a huge collector myself, though I do own a bunch of figurines. Mostly because I thought they were cute, and most of 'em were inexpensive. Probably the most expensive one I own is a Medicom RAH one, and even that is only because it was during a time in my life when I had extra cash - and I knew that sort of thing would never happen again.

But I really don't get the attraction of Funkos, though. Some of the fancier figurines are beautiful, or works of art to some extent... but Funkos just look so mass-produced and cheap to me, and they're not particularly cute, and they're not like Nendoroids where you can change the pose and expression and whatnot.

Like collecting figurines is one thing, but I honestly do not get the attraction of collecting Funkos in particular, of all of them.

I'm just curious, what Medicom figurine do you have?

I've got Edward Elric, but from the 2003 anime, not the current one. He's like... wow, 10 years old now.
Nowadays the RAH line is fancier (that was before the replaceable faces and such), and cost even more. I'm kind of glad I got mine when I did!

I did drool over the Levi Medicom from AoT, but no way I was going to drop 200$ for that. Too much.

Funkos are cheap and carry a lot of underrepresented characters. I didn't care for the aesthetic, but it was basically the only affordable option for a Peggy Carter thing a few years ago. Now I'm weirdly attached to the things.

The underrepresented characters are the only thing that keeps making me consider buying them. Some of the only figurines of characters I like are Funkos so temptation is there but... I just think they're too ugly.

I don't get how some people have THAT MUCH disposable cash. I have a few figures (my pride and joy being a F4F Gravity Suit Samus that was, to my 20-ish self, the almost unattainably astronomical sum of $99.99 - looking up what it's worth now gives me the biggest case of the smugs), but each one's been years apart.

I bought one figure on an installment plan. (This was when I had a full time job.)

I don't necessarily get the idea of collecting toys (or anything) you don't ever play with but I do like collecting things. I collect Legos but only ones that are interesting to build and give me figures in the fandoms I like.

I do think of the types of toys that aren't playable as akin to sculptures. They're often pretty and/or interesting to look at, and I like to surround myself with things like that the same way I will a pretty painting. I'm surprised how expensive some of them are and I wouldn't pay for that. But then Legos are really expensive and I pay for that, so I can see the price being worth it for some people.

Sounds to me like you have a reasonable attitude toward something you're not personally interested in.

(I'm not a collector either. Never had stuffed animals as a kid, don't feel any need to cram my living space with 'stuff' that gives me only transitory enjoyment.)

(Unlike, you, I do judge a bit. People dropping $450 for the D.va statue? Really, people?)

At least for Funkos, A) they're cheap (not when you buy....like fifty but in general) and B) a lot of the time, that's the only merchandise some properties get.

I could have bought a 200$ custom Jupiter Ascending Barbie...but I bought the tiny Funko instead for 10$. I know Tomorrowland and Book of Life had some action figures but they really weren't widely available at the time. And with the release of the movie, besides a plush, the Captain Underpants funkos were the first merchandise in about ten years outside of the books that came out.

My grail funko is constantly rising to over 100$ and I'm like "That's honestly ridiculous, even if I had the extra cash, if it wasn't from selling stuff, I wouldn't get that."

I think for a lot of people, it's just being able to own a small piece that's representative of something you love.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-03 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This is it for me. I like being able to own a physical representation of my favorite characters. There are a couple of fictional characters who mean a lot to me for various reasons and it makes me happy to have a little plastic version of them on my shelf.

I love collecting stuff and I like collecting the Funkos because I find them cute (though I wish they had mouths), they're relatively inexpensive (especially with coupons or on sale), and for some of them, it's the only merch a property gets. I have them all arranged in a certain way and it just makes me happy to look at them, but I'm the type of person who likes being surrounded by things. My best friend has a minimalist attitude to household decor and, while she's happy that my collections make me happy, she doesn't really get the desire for displayed collections.

I like collecting figures but honestly most of mine are birthday and Christmas presents that I have gotten over my lifetime, so it's not like I'm shelling out £500+ a year on toys because I'd consider that a little much tbh.

As for the why I just like the way they look on my shelves and desk, I think they're neat and want to display them. But it's not for everyone.

I collect action figures of video game properties mostly for aesthetic reasons (they look cool/cute, liven up my living space), but to me they are just fun to collect.

I own all of the current SSB4 Amiibo because I always liked looking at the in-game trophy collections and wanting one for myself, and now I've moved onto Blizzard Cute but Deadly figurines (OW only). If I had my own house, I'd probably have a room just for collections and have proper display cases, and I'd be able to invest in the prettier, more expensive figures and statues (ex. Digimon Adventure cast, Overwatch statues, etc.)

When I die, whoever gets my stuff could probably auction everything off for a pretty penny. But while I'm alive, it's something I enjoy. It's better to spend my money on that than drugs or alcohol.

I don't get it either, but my boyfriend likes collecting them. As long as he's happy!

I don't get it. People keep giving me figures, and so I have a small collection that I keep out of sentiment for the people who give them to me, but I don't get actively desiring them. Still, whatever floats your boat.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't get it either, until an unloved series that I was a long-time fan of started getting figs and I had to get them. Having merch from something I loved so much in my personal space was weirdly satisfying. I guess it's just a form of expression?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm all for people living their lives too. When I start to have a problem is when my collector friend's start complaining about not being able to afford things while sitting surrounded by their collections.

Especially my friend who doesn't work but who fills her life with this crap by spending her husband's not inconsiderable income (five figures). They're now in debt and all she does is complain about how poor they are and how they can't afford a house, to have kids blah blah blah.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
SA I know this sounds bitter as fuck. When you're making every conceivable sacrifice in your own life to scrape together a deposit for the only kind of housing you can afford - a one bedroom apartment - hearing about how my friend 'can't afford ' things like a house with a garden because she buys anything and everything that catches her eye makes me incredibly angry.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't like a bunch of stuff cluttering up the place.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's the sort of thing, either you're a collector or not. I like collecting things, it's just... very enjoyable? Probably the same reason a lot of people prefer paper books to data books, even if the content is exactly the same. I like finding new things have come out, I like finding good deals on them, I like having a reason to go into multiple stores hunting for hard to find toys, I like taking them and displaying them on shelves where I can see them. Heck, I even enjoy completing a 'set' of things. With some things there's also the knowledge if I wait I might not be able to buy it anymore, or at least not for as cheaply as I can now.

And either you like that, or you don't. I can understand feeling a little left out though when your friends are so excited and happy about something that doesn't appeal to you at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Wanted to add too, like any hobby it can get out of hand. I understand being mad at people who complain about not being able to afford things but have tons of blu rays, or video games, or smoke every day, or go out drinking, or whatever.

But for me when I collected Monster High dolls, $20 a month for one new doll wasn't that bad and I was perfectly happy to have that be my 'fun' budget instead of going to the movies, or going out to eat. I got more lasting enjoyment out of getting a new doll and just cooking for myself than I would from a trip to Applebees.

I don't really understand why I like collecting them either. I guess they're little representations of a larger thing that brings me happiness. Kind of like capitalist household gods. :)
