What exactly is the definition of Mary Sue, OP or anyone else?

Because it seems to me that anyone who stars in any panel of a series, ever, can be called a Mary Sue when someone dislikes a character and needs to describe why.

It certainly isn't what the OP thinks it means. A Mary Sue is someone who comes into the story and makes everyone else completely useless zombie slaves as s/he sparkles up the world all by him/herself. Think Berii from Tokyo Mew Mew a la mode.

There are a couple of different types of Mary Sues, actually, I think, and the OP is trying to paint Gokudera as the second? Either a character that is so sparkly perfect everyone swoons around them and they always save the day and are beautiful and have no flaws, or one that... has "cute" flaws and characters either like or "unfairly hate" thereby causing the wrath of the characters that like him/her, and are endearingly useless in a "my hero swoops in to save me! RABU RABU" sort of way. But are still beautiful. Erm.

Basically the second is just the first shoddily disguised in ways so that the creator can go "But see! She gets scared of the dark and cries a lot! She's not perfect! She can't be a Sue! ♥" But... Gokudera doesn't fit THAT definition either, so. :/

In fandom, it seems the definition of Sue is "OMG THAT CHARACTER IS ATTRACTIVE" (or... apparently, sometimes not!) "AND ONE OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS LIKES THEM/THEY HAVE FRIENDS! SUEEEEEE!" And that's the story of how the urge to light fandom on fire and pretend the idiocy never existed came to be. The end.

I know, Gokudera doesn't really fit either of those. The definition of the term has just sort of spread to encompass anything that annoys you about a character, be it a flaw or something right, to be Mary Sue if it bothers you enough.

I mean, I suppose you could see Gokudera's slightly depressing past as Mary Sue-ish? But then you might as well give everyone a mundane history and mundane characters until they're all grey blobs who all sound alike. |D;

Re: 104

Yeah, as far as I can see, "Mary Sue" has expanded to mean, in fanbrat-speak, "a character I personally don't like who has a fair number of friends/one good friend/another character who's romantically interested in them." I just... what? ;;

I love Gokudera's past, depressing as it is. XD; And yeah, I totally agree. There has to be some interesting stuff littered in there, or else everything's just... blah and boring.

Re: 104

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mean, if he had been the obvious main character that got any spotlight and the rest of the cast revolved around him, then I could see it, I guess? But Gokudera is very good at pushing people away and DOES, and people LET him unless situations require him to fight alongside someone else.

I just wondered whether there was a strict definition for the term Mary Sue, but... yeah, I guess it's just 'this is my reason A for being annoyed with him look my point looks so much better like this' rofl.

Oh God, I love Gokudera's past. It wasn't totally focused on to the point of absolute drama, but it was just sweet and sad and understated and aw. >:

Re: 104

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's just... the entire POINT of his character is that he tries so hard to be Badass Lone Wolf and he has to learn he can't do things on his own to be a proper right hand man. And his opinion of himself sucks, he thinks of himself as worthless and tries so hard to prove he's not... I dunno, it seems like. Yeah. The point passed so far over this secret's head that it almost clipped the moon on its way past. ;;

Fandom has fail!definitions now. ): Like a girl character being a whore if they go anywhere near the fantard's OTP, even in a platonic way. Y HELLO THAR CLAMP FANDOM, I'M LOOKIN AT YOU. Sob.

I love how Reborn kind of. CAN'T have melodrama. XD; AT LEAST NOT FOR THE FIRST THREE ARCS, OKAY, the stuff in the future is pretty dramatic. But for the longest time it simply didn't take itself seriously enough. It's like... PART OF GOKUDERA'S TRAGIC PAST, which was PRETTY TRAGIC, included his sister BAKING HIM POISONED COOKIES ALL THE TIME. That just wins. XD; The Gokkunmama thing makes me sadddd, though, but the idea that other families wouldn't want a bastard-kid, especially one who was skilled in a very gentle art (forgetting the bombs, idiots WOULD chalk a pianist as =/= a fighter) makes a whole lot of sense. :>

Yeah. Well, I suppose angst can also be seen as drama-whoring on the mangakas part, which could be translated into Mary Sue-ism? That you're supposed to feel sorry for him? But it's really, really reaching rofl. And dude, he just beat Gamma (right? Or is he going to have yet ANOTHER shounen power boost rofl) so I'm so glad he finally won something once. /o/

Hahaha ohlawd. There's the whole 'pure girls are boring' discussion but if the character does date/have love interests/wtfever, she's a skank-ho. ...ROFL I'm not touching CLAMP discussions with a ten foot pole.

Oh, it has drama, but it. Doesn't focus on it, which is delightful because you can just sort of make it as dramatic as you want yourself by filling in people's thoughts about the situations.

Re: 104

The most basic definition is that it's a character that distorts the reality around it, and makes other characters behave completely illogical.

Like, for excample, a character who treats everybody in a condescending and snippy manner, but is loved by the cast as a sweet, kind person.
