140 OP
(Anonymous) 2008-06-02 12:44 am (UTC)(link)I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear, I didn't mean to facilitate the hate, I meant for this to be an idea that might revive the RP and provide fun for the players and the lurkers.
Re: 140 OP
(Anonymous) 2008-06-02 04:45 am (UTC)(link)Many of the recent secrets about atlarp sound like the massive sense of fan entitlement talking. It appears that some lurkers have come to form the impression that atlarp's players owe them something. That's not fair. More importantly, such comments are sometimes counterproductive. Negative comments can influence and perpetuate bad roleplaying in the following way:
1.) Audience members create negative public criticism of a roleplay without, for the most part, tempering their comments with constructive remarks.
2.) The roleplay members feel this pressure, not to mention the many other pressures that often accompany a multiplayer game. (Examples: the shifting personal obligations of the players, the differences of opinion between players, the lack of new source material to draw upon, etc.)
3.) These pressures combine. Different players have different reactions. Some players become apathetic and are less willing to take risks to ease the failure: why bother, if you're just going to be criticized? Some players quit, because something that was once fun is now work. Some players keep trying to revive the game but their efforts are only minimally successful due to the multiplayer nature of roleplay.
4.) The entire roleplay, which is based upon character interaction, suffers. Plotlines become forced and wooden, or worse, nonexistent. Ideas get recycled and plots become stilted because some players are attempting to alter their style and consciously write for an audience. Funny, spontaneous, and natural interactions occur less frequently.
5.) The audience sees the diminished quality of the roleplay. Some members of the audience continue to selfishly believe that their entertainment is a right, not a privilege, despite the fact that they are contributing nothing. Unfortunately, people tend to repeat whatever the most vocal members of the fandom say. Thus, more unqualified criticisms are made and repeated. The further negative comments reinforce some players' feelings of self-doubt/apathy. This adds to the overall stress/internal conflict of the roleplay.
Repeat as necessary until the RP is devoid of any real enjoyment for the players, which means it is likewise devoid of entertainment factors for the audience.
Sing it with me now: it's the circle of fail, and it moves us all. Unlike the circle of life, however, the circle of fail is not inescapable and can be broken. As an audience member in an internet fandom, you are choosing what you view. As such, you should choose to view something that you get enjoyment from. You will not always be amused by all of the fan works created by other members of the fandom. That's okay, we all have different opinions. However, if it comes to a point where you can no longer be an enthusiastic or respectful audience member, that's the sign that you should get up and walk out.
