Re: Did you like the fandom of ten years ago more than fandom of today?

Both have their pros and cons, tbh. On one hand, there's much more out there thanks to all the different media that exists now, especially if your fandom is large and popular, and if you want to connect with other fans it's way easier to find them now than it was 20 years ago. On the other hand, there's a LOT of bullshit policing these days: "if you like Pairing X you're shipping an abusive relationship and should DIE", and "if you don't accept my totally unfounded and completely baseless headcanon about Character Y you're ~insert whichever "ist" applies~ and should DIE". People have always had their own headcanons and dumb ship wars are not new, but it just seems like there's a lot more dogpiling and people gleefully jumping at the chance to ruin things that literally do nothing but make someone else happy. It's bizarre, to say the least.

Yeah, like I've heard a lot of pros for now is that fandom is less bigoted, and in some ways it is, but imo there's unfortunately a number of fans who use this ship is problematic or whatever as means to bully people who are doing no harm to actual people. It's shipping wars bullshit disguised as social justice. Additionally, not a whole lot seems actually vested in helping the oppress by trying to put out educational resources or similar productive things. It feels more like a performance thing a lot of the time, like look how dumb and bigoted this person is and how I'm totally not. There's exceptions, obviously, and I do think most people have good intentions at heart, but it's really easy to get mentally lazy in regards to politics and do in-group out-group shit when that does little help those who need it and makes it more difficult to have an open, low judgement political discussion so people can change those views.

Given most political arguments devolve into shitflinging and it's dumb to expect nerds to be any different. It's still frustrating.

Shipping wars bullshit disguised as social justice is a perfect description.
