Did you like the fandom of ten years ago more than fandom of today?

No. Despite the recent surge in fandom policing (which I firmly believe is on a cycle), fandom today is way larger and accessible. Which is great for someone like me who avoids drama and just wants to read fanfic or look at art.

Try twenty years ago. Much less policing, much more freeform conversations. Much less shipping too.

No? I honestly don't know what my current fandom was like because I wasn't that into Tolkien 10 years ago. 10 years ago I was mainly in the Potter fandom. And I honestly don't really miss it at all. The Star Wars EU fandom I miss a but, my old Luke/Mara fellow shippers. But other than that, I much prefer the way my current fandoms are.

Yes because The Hobbit movies hadn't come out yet.

Yeah. I hate how a lot of fandom spaces are focused on followers and shit. I found it a lot easier to just post my opinions on a forum and make my friends that way.

I like how its easier to find fanworks, though.

No, my favorite period of fandom was the late-90s and super-early 00s, before everything moved on to LJ, and I still like shitty tumblr fandom more than I liked LJ fandom.

Not sure, they've both got their bad bits. The ship-wars of yesteryear I caught the fringes of were no less stupid or nasty, just the ones now are a different kind of stupid and nasty, but it's still the same shit that has been going on forever(and will always go on forever).

I do prefer how much easier it is to find fic now though, I remember having to trawl through pairing shrines and Geocities for fic in my early years of fandom and while ff.net and Ao3 both have the flaws I like how I can just put in my pairing and something will come up(if it exists). And tumblr is decent for fanart.

There's good with the bad basically.

Yes. Much more. There were way fewer death threats back then. :/

yes. more people were into the same fandoms I was and I had more online fandom friends.

Hm. It's hard to say.

I miss the fuck out of LJ, which was very suited to the kind of fan I am, and really the kind of person I am. I also miss the time before almost everything in fandom became rabidly "political." (Scare quotes because so many of the more rabid SJWs are just using the guise of politics to validate their vitriolic spewing of self-righteous outrage.)

OTOH, fandom has kind of exploded in the last ten years, and as someone who is primarily here to read mountains of fanfic and enjoy mountains of fanart, the more fic/art there is the happier I am. And the easier it is to find and consume said fic/art, the happier I am. So in that regard, I prefer the fandom of today to the fandom of yesteryear.

Yes.

While I'm glad people are more accepting and PC overall, the policing is bonkers!

You can't ship this and you can't like this character and this character is absolutely X and if you think differently, you should kill yourself.

It's so fucking ridiculous. Also, I've had so many people apologize for commenting on my fics, as though a comment would bother me??? Like, when did *that* become a thing??? There's no more discussions either.

It's all just rants and fics and what feels like almost nothing in between.

That said, I do adore AO3, and it's so much easier to find fic there than combing through LJ comms and ff.net for fics.

Both have their pros and cons, tbh. On one hand, there's much more out there thanks to all the different media that exists now, especially if your fandom is large and popular, and if you want to connect with other fans it's way easier to find them now than it was 20 years ago. On the other hand, there's a LOT of bullshit policing these days: "if you like Pairing X you're shipping an abusive relationship and should DIE", and "if you don't accept my totally unfounded and completely baseless headcanon about Character Y you're ~insert whichever "ist" applies~ and should DIE". People have always had their own headcanons and dumb ship wars are not new, but it just seems like there's a lot more dogpiling and people gleefully jumping at the chance to ruin things that literally do nothing but make someone else happy. It's bizarre, to say the least.

I feel like I entered fandom at the end of its "Golden Era" or whatever Era you'd like to call it. (2006/2007?)

I enjoyed the fact I made some friends on a forum (a specific archive site, the place where I consumed ALL the fic) and it was all easy going. It might have been the fandom, the pairing archive, but it was pretty small community, and I would say I was part of the "last generation" before the forum died and the archive ceased existing. But it was fun, and I got know people a bit. So I do miss that.

Other than that time...my fandom interaction has been really limited to reading/writing fic. I don't really go onto Tumblr unless I want some pretty fanart.

What I do like about today's fandom is that (as another anon mentioned) there's so much fic! Quality is always and has always been questionable, but still! There's also more fic (and I am an author of some) with WoC as protagonists (OCs, Self inserts, headcanons of Hermione, actual media that have more diverse casting, idk and idc, I enjoy myself). So perhaps that also is part of the change? Maybe it was always out there and I didn't know where to find it?

Any conversation I have regarding fandom is held here. I like them both equally. I look back fondly on my younger years and interaction with fandom. With my current state of being, I'm fine with today's fandom, pursuant to the way I interact with it.

I miss LiveJournal. And I miss some of the fandoms I was personally in being more active. And I miss people being a little less judgmental. But I do like AO3.

I guess my answer is "yes, I liked it more" but it's more for personal reasons involving my own fandoms than because I think fandom as a whole is "worse."

Then. While I'm sure that there were occasionally people who told other people to kill themselves, it wasn't as socially acceptable as it was then.

There might be fewer homophobes, but they're still out there. It's just that, instead of demanding warning for icky gays slash, they're getting butthurt about other people's queer headcanons.

Re: Did you like the fandom of ten years ago more than fandom of today?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, but mostly because it was more active. IMO there was also less policing of other peoples' kinks and pairings, but I realize that's debateable for a lot of people.

Centralizing everything via tumblr and twitter has made some aspects a lot worse.

In a word: Yes. Social Media killed everything.

Re: Did you like the fandom of ten years ago more than fandom of today?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

Now if it was objectively better or not can be debated, but I liked it better! It seemed like the fandom wank was a lot healthier? It was the typical "I hate Sue's fic so I'm going to make a snide journal post about how it's overrated and she's kind of a bitch." "As Sue's friend I'm going to call out the snide journal post and call the poster a jealous whore."

But I think the morality aspect wasn't there. It wasn't "I hate Sue's fic so I'm going to tell everyone she's a pedophile."

Now when you got to the upper levels and the famous wanks it was absolutely fucking toxic, but as a low level fan you didn't have to deal with that constantly.

Also just on a personal note, as a yaoi and slash fan ten years ago you absolutely understood there was going to be Obligatory Love Interest and you fucking IGNORED IT. And you treated anyone who went around trolling that "OMG Heero isn't GAY and you can't do yuri with Relena she BELONGS TO HEERO" as the dumb troll they were. But now when it pops up I see slashers and femslashers apologizing and talking about how much they love the canon pairing Heelena and they understand how problematic and non-canon Noinena is and they're very sorry.

Also from a personal standpoint, because tumblr fucks up slashes in the tags, the smooshnames won. Fuck everything.

10? No. It's about on a par.

15-20? Oh god yes. I preferred the formats, the people, and the willingness to have long dissecting conversations that weren't arguments.
