Tiny Fandoms That You're Glad Are Tiny

(Anonymous) 2017-07-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about a favorite game of mine and realized that I was almost glad that it didn't have a fandom, because I know the Discourse would be just...insane.

What are some small fandoms that you're in that you're glad are small?

I don't interact much in fandom these days but usually my favorite anime fandoms were from animes that were not at all popular. Anime fans in general are... terrible but sometimes you could find a small group that was really fun and that was more likely with obscure series.

I think anything that's an older fandom, especially from the 80s/90s. They would be brutalized if they were popular today.

Sometimes I wish there were more fanart and fanfic for the Discworld books, but then I think of some of the bullshit Mark Oshiro has come out with while reading them, and I try to thank my lucky stars that that sort of thing is more-or-less limited to his comments section.

[the endless fucking rounds of 'why aren't there any gay characters' when every single time it comes up someone gently explains that Section 28 Was A Thing]

So, I've never thought about this before and honestly have no idea how this works, so this is a completely sincere question. But Section 28 was repealed in 2003. Pratchett published multiple Discworld books after 2003, and I can't think of any notable gay characters in Going Postal, Thud!, Making Money, or Unseen Academicals. So... if it's all about Section 28, what's the deal with that.

No gay characters? Did he not read Monstrous Regiment?

Not yet, he hasn't. He's currently reading Thief of Time, then he's going to read Science of Discworld, then Night Watch, then Monstrous Regiment. I'm pretty sure, at least. I'm not sure where Wee Free Men and The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents fit in on that.

So he's read, like...one book? Tbh, I'm pretty sure there are several recurring DW characters who could be very, very reasonably interpreted as gay even if they aren't explicitly stated to be such, even if they aren't major characters (for example, it would take some serious convincing to get me to believe that Drumknott isn't gay), but I thought that Monstrous Regiment was well-known for having a canon f/f couple + undertones between Polly and a certain other character I won't name in case someone here hasn't read the book. It doesn't make sense to avoid the book that's known to have outright-stated-to-be-gay characters and complain that there aren't gay characters.

he's reading them in chronological order
he's at book 26

I'm not sure what a rule against government promotion of homosexuality has to do with homosexual characters in works of fiction, though?

Unless Pratchett's books were published by the textual equivalent of the BBC?

None. I wish all my tiny fandoms had more fanfic and fanart.

Well obviously sports fandoms are gigantic, but I am glad that everything I've come across in baseball's corner of tumblr is quite nice and friendly. It's rather small. (the baseball fandom on reddit is large and also generally nice, but you'll find some more disagreements and occasional brigading) Anyway, baseball tumblr good, if Cubs (and tbh, Giants, but I mind less) over-saturated.

I don't follow it, but a lot of people I know do, and they all say hockey tumblr is fucking INSANE and horrible to each other and we're all united over things like former teammates playing against each other and hugging, or that time when (like once a season) a cat runs on the field. Or a squirrel. It's surprisingly wholesome.

There are some that I'm glad are kind of dead now. They may have had their own crazy wank back in their time, but the wank they'd have now would just be depressing. A lot of my favorite cartoons/anime had teenage characters and I can't imagine the sort of pedo screaming and how shipping 1x2 instead of 1xR was misogynistic. And one of my favorite writers did 5/13 darkfic so she'd probably have been doxed and given death threats.
