Couldn't agree more. Ruined the show and the fandom for me.

And I'm still peeved about Korra/Asami because I felt like they had little chemistry and was tacked on and this is coming from someone who reads femslash like it's oxygen.

THIS

That was the most disappointing part of the series for me originally, but I much preferred the ensemble cast and extended family in the series. The gaang was more a kids against the world vibe, and I'm glad lok went in a different direction and concentrated on the airbenders and metal clan, Lynn etc. I kind of see it as them sacraficing the small group for more development of mentor characters like Lynn and tension, both of whom I adored.

Though everyone could have done without the love triangle imo, and mako was pretty bland, I agree.

didn't the brother also have the hots for korra? i only watched the forest
first season when it aired so my memory is fuzzy

this show handled love so terribly

Bolin has a crush on her too. I don't know what came from that because I stopped watching after S1 too. I remember the finale being disappointing for other reasons, but the forced romance was the worst part.

I gotta agree. I like them generally as characters in their own right (though I liked Mako much less than the other 3 by the end of the series) but I just couldn't buy them being on the same level of friendship as the original Gaang. Bolin's comment about them being the new Team Avatar had me going, "Why? You guys have barely done anything together!"

Yeah, I agree. Which is funny because I found the friendship between Asami and Bolin the highlight of the group. But the four together? Nah.

I think the nature of the show having such short seasons really hurt it, especially with regards to character development. I mean, really, Korra has only known her group of friends for a few months before she is poisoned and then it's like a year or more before she shows up again. They seem to skip right to the part that we accept they're all friends without doing much to earn it.

It is sad. I liked Makko but I felt that he and Bolin really disappear later on. They don't contribute much. Same with Asami. They had potential but it wasn't the right format, and I think the writers will still writing like they had the old ATLA format.

They aren't Team Avatar 1.0, true, but they have their own dynamic and their own friendship and that's just fine for me.

I never watched that but I definitely can agree that love triangles amongst main characters are fucking awful. I'll never understand the appeal.

Part of it is that the show was in such a hurry getting the plot running with its shortened seasons that it never really dedicated episodes to crew-building.
I wanted to like LoK, I really did, but the dynamic just never clicked with me. And I agree with you that the stupid love triangle did a lot to mess with that.

And yeah, Mako had all that potential :( and it came to nothing

(Anonymous) 2017-07-20 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
LoK sacrificed character building and developing friendships in order to include more of the most boring sport ever invented.

And i definitely agree that Mako is the worst.

I thought Mako started okay, went douchey and then turned out fine by the end. And I love Korra/Asami but I really wish it had started earlier, even though I know why they couldn't do that. Maybe the next kids' series will.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-20 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. I so wanted to love this show, I was so hyped for it, but it lost it's steam quickly. Why the hell did Mako and Korra start bickering constantly right after getting together. It felt forced. Like the writers were desperate to plug in some conflict. Like, damn, that didn't last long! I didn't care about the ship either way, but it seemed like the writers cared about it even less, and in the end it just put everyone at odds with each other.

I'm going to be that controversial person and admit I had zero problem with the romantic mess. I even enjoyed it. Not because I strongly shipped anyone, but it felt fairly realistic for a group of, what, 17-year-olds? I liked how it was handled by balancing being both awkward, painful, and funny. I REALLY liked that Korra and Mako had a relationship, then ended it and didn't get back together. That just felt a million times more realistic than most other portrayals of teen romance in kid/YA-targeted media.

I loved the dynamic, I loved how it evolved and played out.

And also, Aang was annoying and I didn't much care for the series 1 kids. For one, they were kids, so the romance stuff with Aang and Katara was awkward. Wait, except Sokka, I liked Sokka, and Toph. I mostly just didn't like Aang or Katara.

I feel like too many people expected these guys to be the Gaang 2.0 instead of their own people.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they had nothing on the team dynamic of the Gaang, but I still enjoyed the brother/Korrasami pairings. I think too many people went into this show expecting it to be as good if not better as Avatar. Instead it was just different.
