I don't know if you're supposed to like him, but so many did: Walter White. I never understood, he was just a selfish asshole. I guess he appealed to a lot of selfish assholes, or people who wanted to be one.

I never liked him either.

I don't think you're supposed to like Walter White, though. He's interesting, and people might sympathize with him for some aspects of his story arc but I'm pretty sure that most of the appeal of the character is "watch this ordinary dude spiral into a villain".

Yeah, from what I saw, a lot of people did think he was awesome or something. Like there's this mentality that, for male characters at least, it's so much better to be a terrible human being who is powerful and feared than to be an average, kind of boring human being who doesn't feel powerful or respected.

Which is a perspective that pisses me off to no end because it's such bullshit. Nobody loves feeling average, nobody likes feeling like people don't respect them. But as an adult, you grow the fuck up, reign in your fucking ego, and come to terms with the fact that in the grand scheme of things most of us aren't very important, and that's just life. And if you can find a constructive way to Be More and Do More with your life, that's great. But if your power comes from doing horrible things, that doesn't make you cool or great, it makes you a giant fucking loser.

That said, I'm not sure the show actually supported the Walter White Becomes Heisenberg; Becomes Awesome viewpoint. I absolutely think the show explored that perspective, flirting with it and then rejecting it by turns, but I don't think it ever fully embraced the notion.
