What, his solo film that nobody even wants and him being absent from the new main Star Wars films? Sounds wonderful to me.

Exactly. I love, love, LOVE Star Wars: Rebels but count me as one of the ones who think the movie is unnecessary. But, OP will have to put up with hearing from fans. Even Star Wars: Rogue One has fans and that movie is terrible.

Eh, I feel like Han's popularity has waned a lot over recent years. Heck, even fans of him aren't hyped for his own movie.

I think it's because even for people who like him, his backstory is not particularly intriguing or lacking. There's nothing to imply that there was some big, fascinating story... his big story is called Star Wars. That's where his character development happens and everything.
Heck, I myself am fond of Han, but my level of interest in that movie is somewhere around -3. Like, I'm not sure I'll even bother watching it for free, let alone in theaters.
