it's gay

Re: yaoi.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not into it personally. I like either femslash or het.

I wished I liked it more. I can only get into if there's crossdressing and even then I'm picky.

At least more yuri's being translated.

whatever float's peoples boats but I'm personally not a fan of a lot of the tropes.

That, and the wank around yaoi is unfortunate.

The "ew gay" or the "ew fetishizing" kind of wank?

All of the above and, "OMG, this is so important! It's the best representation ever!" wank.

Ah yes, my personal favourite.

I read it pretty much everyday.

I am 100% for more Yuri on Ice style yaoi and less Boku No Sexual Harassment style yaoi. Even if the corn memes are nostalgic as hell.

Out of curiosity, does yaoi cover all forms of slash, or is it meant to apply only to anime and manga slash? Like do people who are primarily into anime/manga still refer to western live-action slash as yaoi, or do they switch to calling it slash?

Re: yaoi.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure for everyone else, but I prefer to go anime/manga = yaoi, everything else = slash.

As far as I know, yaoi is the non-professional or non-commercial side of the m/m market in Japan. The commercial genre is known as BL (Boy's Love)

Re: yaoi.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't waded too deeply in any western fandoms lately, but pretty sure yaoi is used for only Japanese (or maybe Korean) anime/comics. If it's live-action but based on a BL (or clearly serving those tropes), it's still called yaoi if it's East Asian.

I haven't really seen yaoi used to describe western stuff except maybe comics that seem to invoke BL. Certainly not in live-action stuff unless the fan is a very recent migrant from anime fandoms.

I think for most people, yaoi sounds like cartoons.

They told me I'd grow out of it like ten, fifteen years ago. OOPS NOT HAPPENING.

give me the yaoiest yaoi with the yaoiest tropes, I give no fucks, I love the shit out of it.

I like it, but yaoi hands make me lol and I can't get into a story if the uke looks like a tiny kid with a face that's ninety percent eyes next to the hulking seme.

Re: yaoi.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I like cute, prettier ukes and I admit I like the aesthetic with the seme being a little larger and stronger looking.

That being said though, shota is an enormous squick of mine. And many yaoi ukes are shota aesthetic, if not literally kids. Just ewww. Also I hate semes with really huge shoulders and flat chins (as opposed to the uke pointy chin). All the couples in like, Seikai Ichi Hatsukoi and Junjou Romantica look exactly the same.

I enjoy it when it's no the same story regurgitated over and over.

I prefer slash - anime fandoms have certain interaction expectations that are not quite so evident in non-anime fandoms.

If nobody else had done it, I would have.

To answer the actual question; I find yaoi tropes offputting, unsexy, and kind of skeevy, but not uniquely so. (I have a lot more actual vitriol for "romantic comedies" where the entire plot is derived from a man wearing a woman down until she finally falls in love with him.)

I spend 90% of my time thinking about fictional boys fucking each other.
