I figured they were going for a basic thematic reversal of Luke sparing Vader and winning them both free from the Dark Side in the process. Kylo killing his father is him jumping at the dark side headlong for contrast. I doubt it means he's irredeemable, though. Redemption is a big theme for Star Wars, and as much as I personally dislike the kid, practically speaking he hasn't hit anywhere close to Vader levels of murder and mayhem yet.
