102. Okay, what's the pairing here? So familiar, yet so far away..

104. I agree with this poster and wishes to pirate their newspaper off the internet. For I am a cheap, cheap bastard.

110. I still hope that it's at least partially true. Can't a world where Itachi WAS pretty much screwed up in the head BUT cared for his brother and really did all those thing and THEN got even MORE screwed up by Akatsuki, so much that by the end he really WAS so far gone that he MEANT what he said about Sasuke's eyes, exist? Anyone?

117. I. I need to know the context of that scan. I really do. Can someone please provide context?

118. First of all, you're friends are wrong. I won't say they suck because you can be a wond- okay maybe GOOD person and dislike One Piece, but they're still wrong.

Also, you are kinda right. Me, I think it's a bit too heavyhanded for some reason. I mean, this IS One Piece where subtlety is banned and all, but... I dunno. It feels so overblown that the Heavenly Dragons are ALL that monstruous. Which is odd because this is the first time I've ever had any similiar issues with OP villains, I accepted Arlong being a gigantic doubledick, I accepted Ener being a lazy magnum-dick, I accepted Rob Lucci being one hot piece of dick, despite these characters being jsut as overblown as the Heavenly Dragons, but them... I dunno. I'm just not feeling it with these guys.

I will however cheer like a mofo in my seat once they start getting their shit handed to them. Also One Piece rocks and can I fansqueal at you at how wonderful these latest chapters have been and how amazing the plot bombs they keep on dropping are?

127. Why is that? Can't say I would mock someone for fancying Reeves, dude's okay in my book.

136. Agreed, people telling Gokudera what's what is always a good thing in my book.

141. Man that show went all up and down and all around the place when it comes to feelings and relationships, I think that arguing a ship because it's more canon is... kind of shortsighted when it comes to Princess Tutu.

Not to say I agree with you, I just don't think using THAT particular argument is that truthful for either sides.

144. ... But what IS going down in that image? Really.

n!s 2 Word. Portraying ambivalent emotions may be hard, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try.
n!s 4 I think it may be that Loveless is such a headtrip that people just can't be bothered with something so vanilla as "just a dysfunctional family relationship". Do note I write this with sarcasm in heart: as fucked up as that is, it's just a pretty big fish among a LOT of other big fishes.
n!s 5 What's the fandom?
t!b 4 That is epic allright, but I'm afraid I can't focus on that... not when the prospect of a battle between Darkwing freaking Duck and Sogeking is clearly about to take place! But will Lulu's heart be able to withstand such tension? Will he find a way to interfere in the fight? What will happen?! Someone start writing this down already!

I agree with you. XD;; Seriously, it seems like half of the people that come into contact with each other could be shipped if you put some thought into it. And some of the ones that DON'T come into contact.

Re: 141

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, but then again I am very, VERY laidback when it comes to shipping. Live and let love, I say. Which is funny, because I used to be a hardcore "If it ain't canon then you canot go there!" kinda guy.. but I quickly realized that hardlining that attitude would just create conflicts, and really, those of objectionable ships wouldn't care if I disagreed so... I jsut stopped disagreeing. It's kind of the other end now: no pairing will ever phase me. I just smile and nod and go "Well I guess I can see that" or "Don't see it myself but whatever floats your boat" and so on.

And really, when it comes to matters like "What fictional characters do you think have a romantic relationship beyond what is shown in their madeup little world", I think a little apathy is a-okay to have.

Re: 141

[identity profile] freakyfanboy.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to get involved in ship wars and things....but the Digimon fandom broke me. Now I'm known for shipping practically everything.

Re: 141

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha oh yes, huge cast!canons, and with SENTIENT ANIMALS at that. Just... trying to make sense of the ships that arise there, it is like emptying the ocean. So darn futile. We can be fellows in shipping apathy, you and I.

Berechested Agni Kai. That is, if you'll pardon the pun, HOT. Also go ganbatte fight Sparky Boom-boom Man, I BELIEVE IN YOU AND ON FANDOM SECRETS IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU TO BELIEVE IN HE WHO BELIEVES IN YOU YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!

It's just most people are like, he can't act, blah blah blah. Even in the Matrix fandom itself there's next to no love for him at all... which I always thought was strange.

Re: 127 (OP)

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, guy can act. Just a very specific set. He's not multifaceted, just good at acting a select set of characters says I.

Seriously, if anything it just makes him MORE tragic in my eyes. And since the manga is on such a dramabend lately, it's not like it would hurt the narrative or anything, if anything it would just make me like it even more.

Re: 110

[identity profile] bakkhos.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Signed. I'm not giving up hope for this characterization (http://bakkhos.livejournal.com/113576.html#cutid1) until the very end.

Re: 110

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OhoHO. I like what I'm reading. I really, really like what I'm reading here. Personally, I must admit I haven't really been thinking that deep regarding Naruto for quite some time now. I've mentioned this elsewhere, but the Uchihas are NOT why I'm reading Naruto. I got into it becuase of a wide, varied cast, and the exclusion of these characters and the focus on the Uchihas has made me direct less and less brainpower towards it. But this is still interesting and thoughtful stuff, and I do hope that it is what Kishimoto intends to reveal as well.

I mean... is it really that bad to let him be crazy? I know that the butthurt fangirls who wants their ultrakawaii chibisugoi Itachi-chan husbando to always be a detached and handsome man who never ever makes retarded faces because he FEELS like making retarded faces, but for once I hope Kishi ignores them and focuses on US. The sane fans. The ones who don't want to throw out years of belief and characterization for... sparkly peaceful jesus-Itachi.

Re: 110

[identity profile] bakkhos.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. ♥ I have to admit that the Uchiha intrigue me the most in Naruto, so I tend to do a lot of meta about them.

I wrote a lot about krazeeface Itachi too and just. I don't think Itachi should be portrayed as out-and-out batshit. Rather, I like the idea that his upbringing itself contributed to the fact that he doesn't share the same moral code as others. So he wouldn't be crazy, necessarily, just completely amoral. And the fault would largely lie in Konoha's lap for training children to be killers from the age of four WTF.

Saint Itachi makes me just as :/ as Evil Itachi. Why couldn't Kishi have struck a realistic balance to have Itachi come out of it totally flawed and totally human?

Wait, wait, wait.

Who do you think Kishimoto is listening to? No, really, do you really think that a Japanese man, creating a manga for a young, male Japanese predominantly male audience is going to be listening to the fangirls? Do you really think he's tailoring any part of his story to his Western fanbase at all? I mean, seriously?

And who do you think is butthurt here?

Hi, I'd like to introduce you to reality. I don't think you've met. In reality, Kishimoto is not writing this for any of us, and if we are, it's a vastly secondary thought. He's writing this for, you know, his primary target audience, which last time I checked was preteen Japanese boys. Also last time I checked, he's not just magically pulling stacks of manga out of his ass to distribute himself--everything he's doing would need to be approved by his publisher, who might be somewhat concerned with foreign distribution, but aren't going to do anything to jeopardized their core, target demographic, and I would bet money that I don't have that if they thought that their author was trying to appeal to some crazy girls on the other side of the world (who probably won't even buy the import because so many of them just snag it off the internet anyway), they would put that down so hard, so fast, it would make Ethni the anthropomorphic personification of Ethnocentricity's head spin.

Or maybe I'm wrong, and you think that wanting a sparkly Jesus Itachi husband all for your own is a popular fantasy among twelve year old Japanese boys?

I agree with you on the heavy-handedness. My main problem is that there are just so many new characters that I keep getting confused and have to keep checking back to remember who is who and have we seen this guy before and so on. BUT THE PLOT BOMBS. OH SHIT THE PLOT BOMBS.

The OP just needs to make friends with One Piece fans, really. Solve all the problems.

Re: 118

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-06-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The cast doesn't bother me that much actually, say what you will about Oda's art but he knows how to make them DISTINCTIVE. I'm already fanboying Uruoge SO BAD and can't wait for him to get more characterization so I can RP him somewhere. That they all look distinctive and different from one another helps tons for me. And yes, the mothereffing plot bombs, OP IF YOU ARE READING THIS you can come nad be loud and outwardly fanboy/girlish with us we won't mind. Unless you are the laidback type who refrains from such extroverted expressions of joy, then we can have quiet and analytical discussion to that is fine as well.

It feels so overblown that the Heavenly Dragons are ALL that monstruous.

Who said they were? We've only seen a few-- maybe some of them are perfectly nice people who don't keep slaves and use their power and influence to help people.

But if you hand someone a free pass to do whatever they want however they want whenever they want no matter what and tell them they can have the head lopped off of anyone who so much as looks at them funny or less and it is going to go to their head. One way or the other, it's going to go to their head. They will probably grow up an overprivileged, self-indulgent dick who likes to hurt people, and they will probably raise their children to be the same way. It's human nature, and in this case it's been nurtured for generations upon generations.

At any rate, I don't think it's overblown at all. The Tenryuubito are what happens when a kid grows up with everybody kowtowing to them and possessing the absolute surety that no one is ever going to hurt them or talk back. They are born and bred with the ingrained belief that they are invincible, and if no one ever lays a finger on them, how are they to assume otherwise? How are they to assume that morals apply to them, or even really exist as a viable concept? Law doesn't apply to them. Of course they're unbelievably scummy bastards.

Re: 118

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
They're portrayal so far as every single one of them being bad people. And of course, I am always open to the possibility, I outright HOPE for somewhere down the line, we'll see one of them being a decent sort. And while all those points are true, I STILL don't really feel them. There's no real logic at work here, I just think that seeing someone send their dogs to pee at them, then shoot them while they were down and have another one just snatch a new wife because he feelsl like it and shoot their husband... it's cake upon cake, a swedish proverb that basically amounts to point out that something is "too much", like how eating a cake mized with another cake just makes you feel bloated, not satisfied.

I suppose that is my main beef with this, really. I feel bloated when I see that much douchebaggery take place in a single chapter. I could accept a lot of other villains being that bad, because... maybe it was because they were terrifying. The Heavenly Dragons, as I call them, aren't terrifying. They're ridiculous, rich little spoilt bastards who have no reason to wield that much power. I can understand people kowtowing to Ener because Ener will go Pikachu on steroids on your ass if you disrespect him, but the kind of power that the Heavenly Dragons are throwing around, it just... doesn't sit with me. I can't agree with it or come to terms with it, I don't know why, I just... can't.

Re: 118

[identity profile] runic-binary.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
They're ridiculous, rich little spoilt bastards who have no reason to wield that much power.

But that's the entire point of their characters. They're not supposed to be terrifying; they're supposed to be disgusting.

Re: 118

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... maybe that's it. They are disgusting, and they're making the World Goverment look disgusting as well by association.

Now, the World goverment is a whole 'nother discussion in itself, but it is MY opinion that up until Enies Lobby, they were portrayed as a solid organization who, even if they had flaws such as some corrupt officials, at least tried to look out for their nations best interests. By showing us the bombings of Ohara, CP9's EXISTENCE in general and now the slave trading and how the WG protects and covers up the Heavenly Dragons, they seem to be painted as these truly horrible, scuzzy scumballs. But these are the representatives of "order" in the OP world, who have people like Garp, Coby, Hina, Smoker ffs on their side. I suppose that to me, this made the WG look like something that was neither positive or negative, but just a regular goverment doing the best it could to protect it's people. But with each passing arc the WG appears to take on the role of the villain of not just the Strawhats, but the whole damn WORLD, and I suppose I'm not really buying the way we're being sold this image of them... at least not just yet.

A Pokemon pairing that leaves someone depressed. The mere concepts of "Pokemon" and "depressed" just should not belong together.
