104-Shit I know some people who need to get that through their skulls.

110- I like having an actual villain instead of someone who hints and subtext about him not being bad have been dropped since roughly when he showed up...

117- I guess it depend on the opinion. Because like it or not, some fandom opinion are based on deeper seated grossness. (I.e. those uh...only Asian people should cosplay secrets? Yeah.)

126- Me too. :/

134- That'd get me watching.

146- You just made my day. The most discussion I've ever been able to manage about these things is "Oh cool."

158- Ripping off such a distinct style is never good, but with his art it's particularly bad because he found a niche that really ONLY works for him.

161- I know what you mean. My mom makes the best Yaoi jokes in the group.

But that example goes beyond fandom to how someone treats others, rather than how they treat or respond to a work of fiction.

I'm guessing this is to 117, and that's excatly the point I was trying to make. It's a blurry place, and to use a more...hot topic example, yeah, hating someone because they don't like you fav (or handful of fav) slash couple is one thing, but refusing to be friend with someone because they don't like ANY slash, think it's gross, etc....it's nasty opinion covered up with fandom so people can fall behind "But it's just fandom! Not siriz bizness calm down!"

And if you haven't been around long enough to see someone hiding real life prejudices behind fandom you haven't been along wrong (On the flip side, there's always 800 people to yell "Misogynist!" or "Homophobe!" if you don't agree with what they like/think you should like)

117. When I started in the Gundam Wing fandom, I didn't like slash. I got over it, but I'm sympathetic to those who feel that way. Fandom /= RL. You can find watching or reading about two guys getting it grosses you out, but support Gay Civil Rights IRL. For instance, half the time, I find sex scenes gross. I guess I'm a fairly reserved person, and I really like Gen. I read slash or het, but I often scroll past the smut. But that doesn't mean I don't support romance or relationships IRL.

When I see them express RL prejudices, then that will affect my attitude. Trust me, stuff like that is nasty and hard to hide. People reveal it like they enjoy picking their own scabs. But fandom opinion? I think a large problem with fandom is that people are quick to put their fellow fans in boxes and then ship them off because they don't support or ship or like a character, and that makes them BAD.

I hate yahoo a lot sometimes.

You can support gay rigths IRL and still be a Homophobe. My dad is that exact way. He just know his opinion isn't fair to press on people. There's so many shades of gray between "Yay happy gay people!" and "Wanna beat 'em all to death."

But there are many people who hide their real life prejudices behind fandom, because they know saying "Oh hey I'm a homophobe." or "Oh hey I hate woman." isn't gonna fly. And chances are most of them are people like my dad, or people who haven't had a lot of real life experience past fandom, or have those prejudice in some shade of gray, and hiding it behind fandom is easiest. But if you hate ALL slash couples because they're gay (Not that you avoid the smut, ot that you dislike the trapping of yaoi) or you hate ALL woman (not because the fandom you're in writes them weak and in other fandom you like them) then yeah, that's a prejudice. And there's ton of people in fandom like that, and nobody call em on it, cause fandom isn't siriz bizness.

The racist secret everyone reacted to only because it was worded so strongly, but you see that opinion else where (Or, only attractive girls should cosplay, or anime/jrock fans who only like stuff from Japan. All those are variations that rarely get called on because they're less in your face, but they all show nasty real life biases)

And if you're not talking about those people, a) Your secret was worded weakly and b) I don't know why were arguing because I'm responding to something you didn't write.

I think to some extent almost all of us have issues with racism, sexism, and homophobia. Even though we know it's morally wrong or irrational, most of us, unfortunately, have been raised in a prejudiced society, which floods us with stereotypical and fear-mongering images. So I also completely believe that people can support gay rights and yet still feel uncomfortable around gay people. I don't lose respect for them over that, because it's always better to judge by actions, which a person can control, than their internal impulses, which they cannot.

But there are many people who hide their real life prejudices behind fandom, because they know saying "Oh hey I'm a homophobe." or "Oh hey I hate woman." isn't gonna fly.

But you are reacting to RL sexism and homophobia, which you assume to be planted in some fannish actions. And while that sometimes is the case, I think you have to be careful when you assume motivations like that. There are plenty of gay males who do not like slash that I know IRL, because they view slash as exploitive porn, much in the way I know feminists who hate heterosexual pornography because they believe it demeans women. I'm actually one of those people who argues incessantly about the problems in misogyny in fandom, but I make an effort not to lose all respect for someone just because I think that she's too harsh on female characters. I have friends on both sides of the issue, and the problem starts when they start disrespecting the other based on her opinions towards fictional characters.

e (Or, only attractive girls should cosplay, or anime/jrock fans who only like stuff from Japan. All those are variations that rarely get called on because they're less in your face, but they all show nasty real life biases)

These opinions are not only "fandom opinions," but are opinions placed on real life people. How people treat real-life people /= how people treat fandom.

And if you're not talking about those people, a) Your secret was worded weakly and b) I don't know why were arguing because I'm responding to something you didn't write.

I think not! *Headbites*

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I do as well (Obviously, I love my dad. Ok, not obviously, but I do.), but I was trying to give an example of opinions that are negative things, without being negative in the extreme. People seem to think if you call someone a homophobe, racist, etc that it is to the worst degree, and like you said we all have negative tendencies. Calling a spade a spade is not a bad thing.

See, to me ones opinion, and how you act are always showing something you think, whether it's consciouses or not. I don't think it being "fandom" gives you a by. Do I think you should hate someone if they don't ship x and y? No. (Honestly, I don't think you should hate someone if they are a little homophobic, racist, whatever, if they're, like you said, trying to overcome it. But I can see why some people would)

Part of this issue is that I'm not talking about slash as porn, and I'm not sure why you keep reverting back to it as such. Gay=/=porn, even if porn is a big part of it in the fandom sphere. If someone refuses to like something, because it's gay, yeah that's a sign of homophobia. And yes, it's a real life bias, but it's also a real life bias that is coming across as fandom. The two aren't completely disconnected. Anything that we spend so much time and energy on becomes part of our real life, and vice versa.

You're drawing a very unclear line about where fandom begins and real life ends...all fandoms, at some point, involve real people whether it's the creators, the fans, the actors, musicians, etc. And all fandoms effect real life people. Saying "All Japaneses music sucks." insults Japanese artist, saying "All Slash sucks!" insults all slash creators, and both are based in a nasty real life issue.

If how you treat a fictional character/event/thing is rooted in something that can be reflect in real life (And most of them can), then yes, you have a right to apply it to real life and call them on their shit. If someone's going on about how "Tifa/Orihime/whomever must be a slut cause she has big tits." then yeah...that's uh...gonna effect my opinion on them.
