So far I've seen people being positive over the idea but pointing out that it's not some slam-dunk win for inclusivity, which isn't wrong.

I mean I figured getting a non-white male actor into the role would have been a neat thing to do but we haven't even managed that yet, and it's hardly as big of a change.

But I am also not in the Who fandom on any level so I'm only seeing the outskirt stuff from people I follow.

Wait, which is "hardly as big of a change"?

Seems to me it's a big deal either way. I don't want to hear people saying "sure, the next Doctor's a woman, but it would have been sooo much more radical to pick a man of color." And if they had gone with one of the nonwhite male actors whose names got floated, I wouldn't have wanted to hear anyone saying "sure, the next Doctor's nonwhite, but it would have been sooo much more radical to pick a white woman."

It's not a contest! Better representation of all kinds helps everyone in the long run!

And just because it isn't inclusive on every axis at the same time doesn't mean it's not an unambiguous step forward.

Ah, the change comment was more me thinking about the in-universe logistics of regeneration and figuring that skin-tone change would be easier than changing sex? But it's also weird alien-biology so I'm probably just over-thinking that.

It's more that I'm surprised that New-Who hadn't gone for a non-white male before this point because he'd still be a guy if you get me? Like I figured it'd be easier to sell that before a lady.

But It's a nice step forward either way

(And I've liked how inclusive they've been with the supporting cast in recent years too, it's good).

Okay, that's fair, in that for humans a sex-swap would involve more genetic change than a race-swap. But yeah, this is weird alien biology we're talking about.

(And sex-swap can be a natural phenomenon in the biology of other organisms. See: clownfish.)

We've seen one previous cross-gender regeneration (the Master), one cross-race (Mels), and one that was cross-race and cross-gender at the same time (the Corsair). None of them were presented as harder, more complicated, or more unusual for the characters involved. I think it's safe to say it's not supposed to make a difference in-universe.
