I see we already have female Doctor wank

Maybe she'll provide good fodder to revitalize this group.

It's all meta-wank. None of it is actually about the female Doctor (definitely not today, and I think generally so far), and almost all of it is about the appropriateness of peoples' reactions to it elsewhere on the Internet.

What's interesting to me is that it's a reminder of how the effect that Moffat has had on Doctor Who fandom

It feels like around s8, everyone who wasn't on board with what Moffat was doing just stopped paying attention to the show altogether. Which is good in a way, but that turned out to be a huge portion of Doctor Who fandom. It's weird to remember how huge Doctor Who fandom used to be compared to how small it feels now. Like, it was massive, and then Moffat Moffat-ed in seasons 6 and 7 and everything became a referendum on Moffat for a while, and then most people just left. It's kind of sad. A lot of people just not paying much attention.

Yeah I'd say of all the friends I have who watched Doctor Who with me, I was the only one who was still watching by the end of Moffat's run. And honestly I get it, if not for Capaldi I would have been gone myself and I lost a lot of my excitement for the show.

I'm pretty sure a female Doctor was a calculated move on BBC's part to gain attention for the show again. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but I don't think they really did it to gain any progress points as much as they were trying to gain back viewership they lost (and I do know a lot of female fans who left during Moffat's run.)

It's still a positive change and it means media is realizing that female protags = audience gained.

AYRT Oh yeah like I said I don't think it's a bad thing, I just was thinking in terms of realistically the BBC is a business and I'm sure they made this move to get some attention for the show since it's been on a decline. They probably finally realized doing the same white guy just wasn't going to bring a lot of attention with a modern audience.

NAYRT but I would assume it's both

The BBC is a business, but the people within it are human beings many of whom (I would assume) have various creative agendas and priorities and stuff and I'm sure that also played a major part in making the decision
