I thought she (or her character -- hard to tell) was so annoying in Broadchurch that I can't be excited for her Doctor. I feel lame for this but it's true.

I felt the same way, then felt guilty about it because her character had, after all, lost her son in a horrific way. But she was still pretty annoying, though not as annoying as her husband.

Yeah, there's definitely value in creating a tension in the audience by presenting grieving parents as fully fallible humans and not innocent angels for whom it would be super easy for us to sympathize.

I just can't look at her face without remembering how irritated I felt with her.

It's why I can't deal with Keira Knightly-- the first thing I saw her in was Dr. Zhivago, and I hated her Lara so much that the taint will never leave her.

This is totally a thing that happens, though. When I watched Once Upon a Time for the first time, my views on characters were totally skewed because of how much I disliked Jen's character in House. When you recognize an actor and dislike them in a previous role, sometimes it does effect how you see them in the current role.

Absolutely! See my comment above re: Keira Knightly.

I know it's irrational and unfair to them as professional actors, but I can't help it. (It's not just women, either -- I love old movies but can't watch Anthony Quinn in anything because I hated his character in La Strada so much.)

Watch her in a damn episode first

My friend said the same thing, that she has a bland face. I said she reminds me of Peter Davison. He's also not particularly distinctive looking. But who cares? She'll have a good outfit and if she's a good actress she'll do well assuming they don't give her terrible material to work with.

How do you know she'll have a good outfit? The actress said the outfit in the trailer is not 13th's outfit. It's a shame, too, I like this one, I don't want them to put her into something stupidly girly.

If Broadchurch guy was gonna cast a Broadchurch actress, I wanted Olivia Colman.

Olivia Colman has already been in literally every episode of television ever produced anywhere in the United Kingdom so I personally wouldn't want her to be the Doctor

It makes me a little sad that all of the secrets so far about her have been mostly negative or apathetic, but I can't say I'm surprised knowing this community...

You should totally make a positive secret about her! The community needs more secrets.

I thought being negative and/or apathetic was what made them secrets? Since we're all supposed to be happy and supportive of the casting in public because yay diversity.

Make your own secrets then. There were... 2 or maybe 3 secrets about it so far, that's not exactly some overwhelming number anyway so maybe less of a knee-jerk "wah this community hates her,I knew it" reaction just because not everyone is preemtively in love with some bland looking white chick in this role is in order.

She was okay in Broadchurch (if I'm honest she never stood out to me) but it was a completely different role so I'm definitely going to be waiting to see how her approach to the Doctor is. It could be good, it could be awful.

There's also the writing to content with even outside her performance, everything is just a big wait and see right now.

Yep, totally agree with you, OP. I didn't want a female Doctor, but if we had to have one, then I expected someone more charismatic to be given the role. Apparently, it's a big deal, this first female Doctor business thing, you'd think they'd pick a proper actress and not go with a generic blonde, bland white girl. I'm really, really disappointed. This is the first time I can't picture the new actor as the Doctor, and it's not even because it's a woman. She's just...meh. But god forbid I say anything off anon, I'm supposed to adore her, apparently, because we both have boobs or something.

(off topic, but the fact that the fandom is already shipping her with almost every female character we had in DW is really annoying)

Isn't that just what fandom always does? You always see ship-fic popping up when a new Doctor is cast.

Who would you have picked?

Not OP, but there are much more interesting choices, like Sue Perkins, Olivia Coleman or someone barely even known, I'm sure there was at least one person with more charisma than her. This is such a poor choice I can't see DW not getting cancelled or 13 turning into 14 very, very soon.
