I'm tired of the ecological movement's apparent obsession with "the children" when a lot of environmental problems are directly or indirectly caused by overpopulation.

Overpopulation is a complicated issue because pretty much all post industrial societies are or are on their way to a population decrease due to lack of kids. Where as a lot of pre-industrial societies have an incredibly high fertility rate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependencies_by_total_fertility_rate

Where as places like Singapore are becoming more reliant on immigrants because of the lack of population growth. Japan has a major abandoned building issue because there isn't enough people in the country to live in them. Eldery care in many countries is poor because there isn't enough youth to properly take care of them.

It's very unequal.

Same.

But nobody's gonna argue that one of the best things to be doing for the planet is to stop reproducing because then you'd have people up in arms about their liberties and whatnot.

(And I mean, I get it. Theoretically, I'd like kids someday, provided there's a future left to make in the wake of this whole shitshow, but I'd do so knowing I was further contributing to a serious problem.)

I don't want kids at all and I know some people think I'm a freak for it.

I firmly believe that 1) people should be allowed to have as many kids as they want, provided they can take care of them and not be abusive, and 2) NO ONE should ever be pressured, guilted into, or assumed to want kids. It should be totally up to the people. I think things would all even out more than anyone believes. Why should some people have kids foisted off on them if they won't be good at being parents? What kids deserves that? And someone with the resources and love to take care of multiple kids...well, that's what the world needs to grow compassionate citizens: healthy children in loving homes, growing up safe and secure and learning healthy ways to live.

But many people only care about the future because it might relate to their children. People in general aren't very altruistic. But talk about something grounded in the hear and now (my baby is going to grow up and what will happen to them) I think that emotionally resonates more with people.

Let's face it the world doesn't exactly show that most people think ahead and put others before themselves...unfortunately. It would be great if we could all cultivate compassionate and responsible behavior beyond the nearsighted indifference...but most of us feel kinda helpless about the world anyway, related to big corporations ruling, political parties that steamroll over everyone but the rich (and those corporations) etc.

The idea that you can do ANYTHING to make the future better is something difficult to believe or hold onto. Having some tangible reason to not just throw up your hands and give up...well, for some people that's their kids.

I'm not sure if I believe it about the environmental problems being caused by overpopulation by the way. I think they're caused mostly by corporate greed, plain and simple. Do we really need the economy to be driven by egregious consumption, buying food from half a world away, and all of it powered by massive oil consumption and the corporate profits and government "help" that entails?

I think that, more than people having kids, is the issue here. People have always had kids. Some more than others. Not every generation has nearly destroyed the world.

"here" not "hear"
and greed has always existed but we have never had this many people on the planet before now.

your argument is not convincing to me, and your grammar correction does not add to it. i'll back away now though. there's no point arguing

Yeah, but if everyone lived like people do in places where most people still have lots of kids, the earth could support a lot more people. One American puts as much stress on the environment as a whole bunch of people for whom a bicycle and a couple of goats are big-ticket items. Americans need to live way shittier lives, but unfortunately for the environment, the world is going the other way, with formerly agrarian societies scrambling for cars for everyone, disposable consumer goods, and three meat meals a day, and industrialized nations rushing to provide them so long as they can make money from it.

The countries that use the most resources, the most developed countries, tend to have lower birth rates that either cause stable or even decreasing population. It's countries that don't use nearly as many resources that have more kids. What we're really looking at is consumption of resources, so you can't simplify it into "Save the planet, don't have kids!".
