Haha, thanks for taking that in a direction I didn't expect, OP.

Man I remember d'awwwing when he tried to stand up to the Trio in the first book. To prevent them from getting Gryffindor into more trouble. That scene is, in IMO, one of the best portrayals of what being a Gryffindor meant. He so sweet and scared, but brave.

I'm happy he got more attention as the series went on.

That scene is the best.

It's why while I'm glad OP is excited and welcoming with open arms, I'm more judgmental. But then I've actually had one of my closest friends tell me that she didn't think Neville was interesting or badass until DH. Which ??? no??? Peer pressure is hard and standing up to your friends is hard, especially in a situation like Neville's where they're his friends, but they're much closer to each other than any of them are to him. And to stand up to them like that at the age of 11? Neville was always bad ass, full stop.

Preach. The signs of badassness in Neville were there from day one!

I don't know, I definitely get where you're coming from but it also does bum me out a little in that it seems unempathetic in some way? For people only to be OK with him as a character once he's obviously a cool good-looking hero

This is sort of a completely unanalyzed emotional reaction and I don't know if it's correct but that's how I feel.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, some people are fair weather fans. They don't like a flawed character they only want favs that are badass most of the time. It's shallow, but pretty harmless.

I guess that's why that moment was such a big deal because it was Neville that people had always ignored.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-26 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, I totally get this, OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-26 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of people saw Neville becoming a bit more confident from GoF on, and especially after OoTP, but I don't think too many people saw DH!Neville coming. I know I sure didn't, and I loved Neville! He definitely was overlooked as a "potential character growth" character, especially before OoTP.

Meanwhile, everyone thought Snape was going to turn much nicer and be reluctant BFFs with the Marauders and/or Harry. Yep. Nope.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought Draco would get a redemption arc too, especially after his turmoil in HBP. His entire character just kinda fizzled out after that.

Agreed about Snape too. It's a real shame his hate for James was so much stronger than his love for Lily. Realistic maybe, but still a shame.

I always felt slightly bad that I'm one of those people who only paid attention to him after he became badass. I actually love characters like him now, but I read the books long before sweet "weaklings" with potential became a type for me.

Aww, this is adorable. I'm glad that Neville got the love, eventually, and I'm glad that you're enjoying it!

tbh I'm not even much of a Potter fan, but you make me want to reread the series and take a closer look at him from the beginning.

I love this secret.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that sentiment, OP. People showing love and appreciation for my fav characters is always a good thing in my eyes. Sometimes a character does have to prove themselves and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

The only fans I find annoying are those that are fickle, or like going from bashing a character and their fans then suddenly acting like they like the character the whole time.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
From the very 1st book when Harry told Neville that he's worth 12 Malfoys and Neville joined Ron when he was fighting Malfoy when he was talking shit to them is when I knew Neville was a true Gryffindor.

The movies kinda turned him into comic relief coward (along with Ron) but I think you could always tell they were both true Gryffindors when it came down to it from very early on.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I love you (and Neville! And it is great to see him get love)
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-07-27 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I agree. Neville has been a favorite for me since the first book. And I'm happy that he's getting more love than he used to.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I love the attitude of this secret. I'm just not able to fully agree on principle because there is a difference between "I liked that band before they got big" and "I liked that character just fine before they were more of an accessible archetype."

"My favorite character/ship is finally popular but people don't embrace the 'right' things about it" is a real fandom gripe that coincides with this.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
From the beginning to the end, I thought he was boring. Still do.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
more neville for the rest of us then

YES! It's awesome when a character that maybe didn't get much attention (but is still cool) is suddenly recognized for being cool. No bad there!

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I do find it kind of annoying when I get scoffed at for liking something for ages, and then later it suddenly becomes cool and everyone acts like they loved the thing from the beginning. That feeling gets exacerbated when it comes to characters in long-running series who I always felt had subtle depth, but who everyone snubbed until the character became "badass"/"awesome"/"flawless" in the exact same way as all the other characters were.

I never particularly liked Neville, but I liked him much less after his moment in Deathly Hallows.

"I do find it kind of annoying when I get scoffed at for liking something for ages, and then later it suddenly becomes cool and everyone acts like they loved the thing from the beginning"

I always feel extremely smug that I recognized the quality from the beginning when others were too blind to see it, and make sure to point out this fact at every opportunity. Not in a "I liked X before it was cool" kind of a way, more in a "HAHA WHO WAS CORRECT ALL ALONG THAT'S RIGHT BITCHEZZZ IT WAS MEEE" kind of a way.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really mind if people are meh on a character I like and then the character becomes popular, but I do hate it when people flat out hate a character for ages and then the character gets popular and they pretend they were a big fan all along.
