I think it'd be neat if Yuri on Ice season 2 tackles a homophobia sub-plot. Especially a Russia-centric one.

On one hand, I can see why this could happen since Russia's not exactly LGBT-friendly in real life and maybe it would come off as weirdly disingenuous if they didn't tackle such an issue, but on the other hand, I really love the positivity in the world of YOI and how no one bats an eye if two dudes are in a relationship. The way everybody reacted to the rings made my friend cry because she wished she lived in a world where her relationship with another girl was treated as both normal and worthy of celebration instead of as amoral and sinful.

ayrt

Yeah I remember that tweet, and I get that and respect that. I'm gay myself, so I technically do support all fluffy portrayals of gay people not rife with stereotypical homophobia plots and where they actually get to be happy and being gay is so not a big deal that it's not even worth mentioning

But that being said, I still kind of want a dramatic Russia-homophobia plot line that temporarily turns Yuri and Victor into Romeo and Juliet before the POWER OF LOVE CONQUERS HOMOPHOBIA IN RUSSIA. Just as a bitch-slap to Russia for one, and also because I want to see a cheap romantic plotline where Victor is pressured to hide the gay if he wants to skate professionally again and Yuri almost gets beat up by Russian mafia guys before Victor saves them and somehow Phichit has a gun I'm getting carried away

NGL That sounds fascinating. Lol You should write a mafia AU.

I haven't even watched YOI and I want to read this. :)

Please no, this very gay person is tired of True Love Conquering Homophobia. Give me one goddamn depiction where I can veg and not worry about the thing I deal with daily rearing its ugly head.

I'm gay too and for all I'm sick of seeing this trope in "LGBT novels" and such, I don't think I've ever seen it in an anime. Maybe not even a manga? I'd be interested to see homophobia and gayness as an identity addressed in anime, not necessarily YoI but maybe.
