Ignoring interesting and potentially meaty plot points seems to be a trend these days. Usually they seem to be ignored in favour of coffee shop or high school AUs. :(

It's pretty bad when that when you filter out the AUs, nearly half of the fics disappear.

...There isn't a lot of that?

I'm not sure if you mean 'not any' or 'not enough.' The latter is subjective, but I definitely read fics on the subject, including one where Charles ended up in a coma partially as a result of that scene, and there were a few shorter ones where Charles told Erik off about it after the fact.

Not OP, but, you wouldn't happen to be able to provide links? Help a fan who agrees with this secret, subjective or not, out?

He wouldn't feel anything beyond the first few seconds. The brain lacks any kind of pain receptors. In fact, some brain surgeries keep the person awake. I mean, that initial pain of cracking the skull would be fucking awful but after that he wouldn't feel it.

Also, if Erik was sending that quarter straight on, it didn't kill the dude by cutting into the brain. He would have been cutting the corpus callosum (the bands that join the two hemispheres together). Cutting that is actually a treatment option for very severe epilepsy.

Not saying it wouldn't have killed him, but if the quarter was dead center, it wouldn't be through direct brain damage but rather the skull damage and brain swelling (I would guess - I'm no doctor). Probably not an instant death the way it was portrayed in the film, though.
