He wouldn't feel anything beyond the first few seconds. The brain lacks any kind of pain receptors. In fact, some brain surgeries keep the person awake. I mean, that initial pain of cracking the skull would be fucking awful but after that he wouldn't feel it.

Also, if Erik was sending that quarter straight on, it didn't kill the dude by cutting into the brain. He would have been cutting the corpus callosum (the bands that join the two hemispheres together). Cutting that is actually a treatment option for very severe epilepsy.

Not saying it wouldn't have killed him, but if the quarter was dead center, it wouldn't be through direct brain damage but rather the skull damage and brain swelling (I would guess - I'm no doctor). Probably not an instant death the way it was portrayed in the film, though.
