Saw a post headcanoning young adult and teen characters as ace bashed as being "gross" because "you're sexualizing a minor" on a blog where headcanoning any character as gay (or growing up to be gay) would be celebrated. Like regardless of your opinion an ace discourse that is some serious fucking hypocrisy.

I'm getting angry replies on a post about the topic about how minors don't HAVE sexual attraction and knowing your ace means knowing a bunch of stuff about sex which teens can't so its sexualizing .

I'd guess with the way tumblr fandom is nowadays they've decided that acknowledging that minors have ANY sexual attraction is bad and almost like being a pedo/sexualizing minors.

Supposedly according to some people if an older person headcanons a minor as asexual it means they're "thinking about how sexual" they are and thus creepy wrong and awful.

At least that's what I've heard.

Honestly, what I suspect is happening here is the same old BS: these people don't like the idea of the character as ace, but instead of just agreeing to disagree, they're trying to stomp the idea out of existence by inventing nonsensical reasons why it's morally wrong.

I'm an ace person myself, and although I don't tend to have ace headcanons about characters, the way these people are responding to this ace headcanon (and how obvious it is that they don't understand asexuality AT ALL) is really pissing me off.

It pissed me off too, so you're not alone. Its ridiculous how they're trying to stamp out opinions they don't care for with pulling the "moral high horse/you're TERRIBLE" card. And so frustrating

But thanks for your response. Responses like yours remind me why I haven't deleted the comment or stayed quiet. I have friends who are ace, have dated a gray ace person and I think my brother might be ace.

If you mean my opinion, I suppose I disagree because I view asexuality as basically an orientation like any other as it is about who someone is sexually attracted to. Agree to disagree.

But claiming that its okay to headcanon people as one and not another is just stupid imo.

As an ace person myself, I definitely think that when most people imagine a character's asexuality, they're essentially imaging an absence of sexuality. I mean, a character has a presumed potential for attraction, and imagining them as ace is essentially imagining that potential neutralized.

I mean, if I were to imagine an ace character, I would be more likely to imagine them as a distinctly sexual person, with a complex inner appreciation of the erotic. Because that's me. I'm sexual, I appreciate eroticism possibly more than most - I just don't feel attraction between myself and other people. (I still identify as ace because, for most practical purposes, I am.)

So yes, it is possible to headcanon a character as ace in a way that involves exploring what turns them on and gets them off. But A) even so, I don't think there's anything more inappropriate in that than there is in exploring a character's hetero/homo/bisexuality. And B) the vast majority of people who headcanon characters as ace are not going to think of them as robustly sexual within themselves but lacking attraction to others. Most people are just going to think of the ace character as not interested in sex, period - which is, IMO, a pretty inherently nonsexual way of thinking about a character.

Honestly, the thing that's fucked about this whole "sexualizing a minor is wrong" crusade is... aren't a lot of people in fandom (and particularly on Tumblr) minors? Isn't sexualizing fictional characters a way for them to explore their sexuality? If they can't sexualize characters their own age, should they only be encouraged to consider adults as sexual objects? Or are we doing some kind of thought police version of abstinence-only education where you can't even think about sex if you're underaged?
