I think I've done OK, but I could have done a lot better!

It's one of those things I think people figure teens don't need to know yet because these are adult responsibilities, but guess what, you graduate high school and you are an adult. Good luck! Even if you defer adulthood by a few years by going to college, it all still immediately becomes relevant the moment you graduate. All this stull you should have been doing since your early 20s and no one bothers to tell you until you're much older and they act surprised you didn't know.

I think it's always funny when my friends and I ask each other about tax stuff even though we're old enough so we should know by now, but like, everyone is clueless.

Only accountants know how to do taxes, and they hate it. My accountant friends don't even do their own taxes. We are blessed to live in the age of Turbo Tax.

I'm a run of the mill staff accountant and do my taxes, my mom's taxes, and prepare the tax and audit information for seven companies.

I fucking dread the calendar ticking over to February.

Even so, I don't want to waste money getting someone else to do my taxes when all it takes me is maybe two hours. My deductions never even get close to the standard deduction, so if I make a mistake in my deduction calculation it's not even a thing.

SA I understand that because my father is an accountant and he's the same way, he'd rather do it himself and not spend the money.

But my accountant friends are just funny about it and for some reason none of them find that enough of a reason to do it themselves, they'd rather just spend the money and not have to do their own taxes.

Being able to spend money so someone else would perform a (boring) task you could do yourself is one of life's greatest joys, according to a study I recently read. Apparently it brings people more happiness than riches.

Some people seem to grow up thinking you just don't do your own taxes. Maybe they're sure a professional will save them huge gobs of money* or maybe they think it's always too much work. I suppose some of those people grow up to be accountants?

*I have friends who swear up and down having an accountant do their taxes saves them soooo much money, but they don't make a lot or seem to have very complicated financial lives, so I don't know where they think those savings are coming from. Besides, it's not really saving money because they're still paying someone to do it.

One of my friends who talked about it with me seemed to think it was "always too much work" and like since she does it for her job she doesn't want to bother during her off time, even if it's not all that time consuming. I can understand that.

I don't hire an accountant myself though because I have the situation you talked about where my financial situation is not so complicated but maybe for some people it's also piece of mind? Idk.
