I don't think there's anything wrong with spending money on free-to-play games. I don't know why people are so judgey about it, while being fine when people spend $75 on paid games. Free games aren't free to make. If they give you hours of entertainment, surely the creators deserve a buck or two.

I think people are judgey about it because, generally speaking, free to play games are of lesser quality, shove DLC in your face every moment, and are often pay-to-win. Low initial investment means devs have less time and resources to create the game. Pretty much all the free to play games I know of are either shitty, derivative MMOs, casual smartphone games, or MMOs that used to be good but took a hit to quality when they switched to the ftp model. The rare exceptions are things like fanmade games where everyone involved loves what they're doing and money isn't an object.

I don't care what people do with their money, and I have no issue with devs making money from their work, but it's not hard to see why people get judgey about it. You can't compare a $60 masterpiece like Breath of the Wild to... say... any ftp game I can think of.

Maybe, but they are free. I'd assume most users of free games never spend a penny, and many still get 20+ hours of enjoyment out of them. Of course they have to shove payment exclusive stuff at you. How else would you do it, short of making everyone pay a few dollars from the start? But most people are not going to pay even three dollars for a random game they've never heard of, but they might dip their toes into a free game. I'm not sure how else you could have a business model like this.

I mean, these days, even PAID games have DLC and other paid add-ons all over the place. You pay $70 for the game, $15 for a few DLC dungeons, and some more here and there for weapons/costumes. That's typical these days.

Like I said, I don't begrudge a company from trying to make money, but there are generally drawbacks to free-to-play, such as the pay-to-win phenomena and constantly having paywalls shoved in your face, not to mention my before-stated point of lesser quality overall. Most free-to-play games feel like cheap cash grabs, basically advertisements with a thin game premise over the top just to get you looking at the ads or DLC.

Lots of people pay for games these days. Look at the booming indie game market, especially on platforms like Steam. I don't know where you get the idea that few people are paying for games anymore. Videogames are making more money than ever.

Yeah the whole DLC thing is generally crap, I agree, which is why I never get season passes. I was absolutely offended that Resident Evil 7 was asking for another 30 bucks for a season pass after a 60 dollar game that runs about 12 hours max. The only DLC I've ever thought was worth it was the Witcher 3. They don't feel like DLC, they feel like fully fleshed out games in their own right.
