Makeup Question - Foundation Edition

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
DA from yesterday, didn't want to hijack.

I'm makeup clueless. I have a liquid foundation from years ago that still works, but's been discontinued for a while. I usually only use it for photo situations.

I want something to even things out, look good in photos. I don't really have acne anymore, but I do have rosacea so with no makeup I look badly sunburnt on my cheeks all the time. My skin's probably.... combo? Oily-ish nose, dry cheeks, but not too bad either way. I'm fairly pale, but not super glow in the dark pale. What are some brands to check out, what are some to avoid?

I will probably go someplace like Ulta to get them to color match me because I've tried twice eyeballing it myself in the Target makeup section and both times I ended up with a weird shade that wasn't right.

You shouldn't used expired make-up on your skin. It'll probably be discolored and it can make you break out even more.

That's why I'd like to get new stuff

Ooooo, I thought you were looking for tips on using what you have! My bad :)

Yup, I know it's older and I'm sure there's probably much better stuff out there. I just don't want to pay $50 for a tube if a $10 one works just as well! I know some makeup you get what you pay for, and some the cheaper options work just fine. Like cheap eyepencils are terrible, but maybelline mascara's great.

Gotcha! Totally. I just recently had this conversation with my sister, and my brain was like, "Don't let her put old stuff on her lovely face!" And then I missed like, the whole point of your question. (Sorry again!)

Haha, true that. Though personally, I don't like their Great Lash mascara anymore. I still love their Colossal Cat Eyes stuff though.

Honestly, I'm someone who likes the luxury of pricey makeup, but everything I've seen tells me that when it comes to foundation, how you apply it is way more important than which brand you use. Basically, rule number one is to use a beauty sponge or a brush - not your fingers.

Rule number two is that setting liquid foundation will make it last way better, especially if your skin is oily and/or you have fine lines and wrinkles.

Also, a lot of people swear by a primer. They make them for all skin types and at a range of price points. I don't use one myself, but that's only because I use a serum and a moisturizing sunscreen, so I feel like adding a primer over all of that would be one layer too many. Maybe I'm missing out, though, who knows.

With foundation in particular, because of how much of your skin will be exposed to it, I might be a bit wary of using it if it's more than a couple of years old. However, for the most part, in my experience/opinion, the alleged expiration date on 99% of makeup is complete bullshit.

Not saying you should use a lipstick from the 80s, or an eight-year-old mascara. But I keep my makeup products until they're used up, or until they dry up, and I have never had a single skin or eye problem occur from doing so.

ETA: Oh, who am I kidding. I would use a four-year-old foundation without blinking, if it still seemed good. Lol.

I would still at least plan to get a new one at that point, though - which, fancy that, is what you're already doing! Good thinking! :)

I personally love using BB creams instead of foundation, just because they're so much easier to apply, and give a lot more of a natural look. I found this link if you're interested http://www.reviews.com/bb-cream/

take a look at mac and sephora? honestly, foundation is one of those things you shouldn't skimp out on. getting someone to match you is a good idea.

Maybe you could take the old foundation you have to a makeup counter and tell them you're looking for something similar?

I've gotten matched at Sephora, MAC, and Estee Lauder. The girl at Sephora wasn't very nice and the shade she matched for me was too light. The girl at MAC was really sweet, but the foundation made me break out. The lady at Estee Lauder was polite, but the foundation I got is wonderful, matches me pretty perfectly, and it feels like I'm not wearing any, which is important to me because heavier stuff makes me want to scratch my face.

What sort of coverage are you looking for? I need fairly heavy coverage due to some skin issues, and I'm in love with Urban Decay's All Nighter liquid foundation. It's super pigmented, so you really don't need much to go a long way, and you don't need to layer it up to get great coverage. Dries matte, which I know isn't everyone's shit, but I think it looks good-- it's definitely matte and not dry, which is an important distinction.

As far avoiding, I can at least say that if you need decent coverage, a lot of BB creams are useless-- too thin, hard to blend out, but they're really intended more as a tinted moisturizer/sunscreen than a true foundation. They go well on top of other foundations if you like a sort of dewy finish to your look, though.

I do highly suggest going to a makeup-focused store or kiosk to get a tone match, too. It is notoriously hard to match your own skin tone, especially since so many places use such loud, cool white lighting, which washes you out horribly (makes you look like you need more makeup).

I think hitting up Sephora to get recommendations and a shade match would be a good idea.

The employees at Sephora aren't necessarily experts, but they can still help and suggest things, and what I like about getting help at Sephora is that the sales associates don't make commission so they don't tend to be pushy or manipulative. Also, you can get up to three samples every time you visit Sephora, with no obligation to buy anything. It's not weird or rude at all for you to go in and ask to try a couple of different foundations and then just walk out without making a purchase. Seriously, they WANT you to sample stuff, because you're more likely to buy it if you've tried it.

Also, if you buy something there and then you end up not liking it, you can bring it back, no questions asked. Sephora is kind of awesome that way.

(We don't have Ulta in Canada, so I have no idea how it stacks up against Sephora.)

The quickest and easiest thing for you to do would be to apply a pressed powder foundation. It's fast and easy, and you don't need to set it. However, you'll get better coverage from a liquid foundation, and the product will last longer.

Make Up For Ever and Urban Decay would probably be my top recommendations for foundation brands to check out. Make Up For Ever, in particular, is favored by so many makeup lovers it's ridiculous.

And in my opinion, it never hurts to get a medium/full coverage foundation. I mean, it's going to be a layer on your skin regardless of how much coverage it gives you, so you may as well get plenty of coverage. That said, I know Make Up For Ever does a Water Blend foundation with light coverage, if that's what you want, and you get 60% more product for the same price as their fuller coverage foundations.
