They certainly won't all be the same. I wouldn't set foot in one of those highway off-ramp places, I find sex shops that advertize as being woman-centric tend to be good. The one in my city also makes a point of catering to LGBT (actually including the T - that's not just tacked on there).

Better. The ones I've been to have had a lackluster selection of everything except dildos. There is more to sex than dildos.

Me and boyfriend went to one recently (to see if they had anything interesting) - had way more fittings such as crop ends, ties, holders and whatnot. Otherwise - most shops do costumes first, mainstream dildoes and vibrators second (teen me thought that there would be more variety and quality, adult me cried) and some light bondage stuff last. To be fair - people do have specific needs and prefer online orders plus with internet, you have access to more information (toy review blogs are grand - hell, read one that takes stuff apart and does proper material tests).

A lot of sex shops in fic are....friendly, well lit, clean, full of interesting and pretty/expensive/well made toys and fetish clothes/gear, etc.

Most real-life sex shops of are gross and grungy and sell very gross and grungy stuff that looks like it's been on the shelves since the seventies. If they have little booths in the back for...whatever reason? Never. Ever. Go in.

TL:DR - 95 percent of real life sex shops are just sleazy.

Maybe it's because I live in a liberal city, but quite a few sex shops here are just like what you described first.

I've been to one sex shop, ever, and it was a lot more like the former than the latter. I'd assume I got lucky, but it being on the main road and part of a chain probably helped a bit.

I've found most of the ones I've gone into are friendly, well lit, clean, and full of... well... fairly overpriced toys and gear that range from crappy to decent.

The ones I've been to haven't been that bad, but they have awful selections, they're dark, and usually the floor is dirty. And sometimes they have those rooms, though usually there were signs about how they had to be closed for incidents. :p

And the thing is, I'm talking about liberal, large or wealthy areas here. (I don't necessarily live in those areas, but I've visited them.) And they're all the same.

Just ... unimpressive in every way. :(

There's a great little sex shop in my small liberal town that caters more toward women. All the staff are female and are really helpful in finding the perfect toy. Everything they sell looks to be good quality, rather than going for quantity like the sleazy shops.

I tried to watch Vampire Prosecutor. I like vampires. I like prosecutors. I like Asians. I like subtitles. But Vampire Prosecutor was awful.

And I don't have Netflix or Amazon Prime so I don't have any legal way of accessing Asian shows unless they're on DVD.

Every sex shop I've been into is largely the same, and not that skeevy at all. It's like they try to compensate by being as clean and orderly as possible. I think it's probably in their best business interest to keep everything professional and together and have staff who can explain how to use a Triple Action XXX Mega-Action Dildo with a straight face, so customers can feel comfortable and not pop in and then instantly run away in shame.

Though I probably won't go to another sex shop myself since I found out how to order stuff online. lol

I only had two to pick from in my hometown, a clean but pretty generic Ann Summers and a proper skeevy nameless place with blacked out windows run by two old guys, who apparently had a reputation for inviting female customers to the back room for dodgy photoshoots.

Australia has a chain/franchise of Adult Stores and I can't help think that imposes a standard they have to work by, but I have been to a stoore in the CBD that is not that chain and they are the same sort of standard, so maybe it's city shops wanting to be self-respecting, or Aussies wanting to be self-respecting, or general commercial standards in action.

I've never been in a sex shop, and if I'd ever been in one of the ones in the parts of the city where I live that are also zoned for strip clubs, I would probably think most sex shops were grungy hellholes. But there's one a couple blocks from my house that's literally been there decades. I'm pretty vsnilla and have only a couple toys I bought online, but if I was gonna shop in person, I'd check the local store out. From the outside, it doesn't look like one of the XXXADULTXXX sleaze shops, but it doesn't look like it's classy and well lit inside either. More cheerfully raunchy.
