Curious, what did fan fic make you think sex shops would be like? (Don't think I've actually read many fic where a sex shop does show up.)

DA

Yeah, did the fanfics in question make you think that sex shops are better or worse than they actually are? Inquiring minds want to know.

Better. The ones I've been to have had a lackluster selection of everything except dildos. There is more to sex than dildos.

Me and boyfriend went to one recently (to see if they had anything interesting) - had way more fittings such as crop ends, ties, holders and whatnot. Otherwise - most shops do costumes first, mainstream dildoes and vibrators second (teen me thought that there would be more variety and quality, adult me cried) and some light bondage stuff last. To be fair - people do have specific needs and prefer online orders plus with internet, you have access to more information (toy review blogs are grand - hell, read one that takes stuff apart and does proper material tests).

A lot of sex shops in fic are....friendly, well lit, clean, full of interesting and pretty/expensive/well made toys and fetish clothes/gear, etc.

Most real-life sex shops of are gross and grungy and sell very gross and grungy stuff that looks like it's been on the shelves since the seventies. If they have little booths in the back for...whatever reason? Never. Ever. Go in.
*shudders*

TL:DR - 95 percent of real life sex shops are just sleazy.

Maybe it's because I live in a liberal city, but quite a few sex shops here are just like what you described first.

You got lucky, then, 'cause the few i've been in have just been...gross. Thank gods for the interwebz.

I've been to one sex shop, ever, and it was a lot more like the former than the latter. I'd assume I got lucky, but it being on the main road and part of a chain probably helped a bit.

Probably. I'm just glad the internet exists. The shops i've been into have all just been yucky.

I've found most of the ones I've gone into are friendly, well lit, clean, and full of... well... fairly overpriced toys and gear that range from crappy to decent.

The ones i've gone into have made me want to boil myself afterward.

This is one of the chain ones I've been in. Not that location, but there's pictures and they're all pretty standard. https://www.yelp.com/biz/priscilla-mccalls-jacksonville

That does look nice! That first comment about 'holes' - yup, those are the kinds of places that make you run screaming.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah, if the outside of a place doesn't look pink and frilly I don't go in! The really girly ones are usually the clean and friendly ones. Yeah most of the stuff is a little overpriced and you're not likely to find top of the line stuff, but they're not scary. They also tend to have extensive 'bachelorette party' stuff that makes great gag gifts for friends who appreciate and find gifts like that funny.

My two biggest issues with most sex shops are: they're just never *clean* - everything seems to have a film over it, either of dust or something sticky. And the stuff they sell is really, really, *really* cheap, in every sense of the word.

Online shopping has made things so much easier and nicer.

The ones I've been to haven't been that bad, but they have awful selections, they're dark, and usually the floor is dirty. And sometimes they have those rooms, though usually there were signs about how they had to be closed for incidents. :p

And the thing is, I'm talking about liberal, large or wealthy areas here. (I don't necessarily live in those areas, but I've visited them.) And they're all the same.

Just ... unimpressive in every way. :(

Right? It's really kinda sad how gross so many of them are, when they could be really fun and awesome instead.
